A cosmetologist, as a specialist working with various preparations and equipment, must know the rules of conduct in unforeseen situations that threaten health and life. Cosmetic procedures do not always go smoothly: an unexpected allergic reaction to an injected or externally applied drug, an increase / decrease in blood pressure, or loss of consciousness – in such situations, practicing cosmetologists are often lost, clearly not knowing the rules and providing emergency care in such situations.
Caring about the safety of patients at the appointment with cosmetologists, within the All-Ukrainian program for the development of the cosmetology industry in Ukraine, company "Emet" organized a practical seminar «Cosmetology SOS – emergency conditions in cosmetology. Theory and practice. The seminar took place on June 15 in Dnipro.
Emergencies in cosmetology: when and why do they occur
As part of the seminar program, the participants of the training received valuable information about the diagnosis of emergency conditions and first aid in the cosmetologist's office; had the opportunity to practice practical skills on mannequins; learned what components must be present in the first-aid kit of a cosmetologist and what medicines are used to provide emergency care.
Every cosmetologist should understand that even a healthy person's body can react to a certain drug, hardware, cosmetic product, and even a sudden change in body position in a rather unexpected way.
A correct history taking and the patient's steady adherence to the recommendations for preparing for the procedure minimize the risk of dangerous situations, but, unfortunately, do not completely exclude it. Therefore, even an experienced specialist cannot predict how the patient's body will behave.
Knowing how to properly respond to an emergency in the beautician's office will help save a patient's life in a critical situation.
Possible emergencies and skills that the doctor should have
The most common cosmetic emergencies are allergic reactions, rise/fall in blood pressure, impairment or loss of consciousness.
Calling an ambulance in case of emergency is mandatory!
To assess the situation and provide conditions for emergency care and provide it correctly, the practicing cosmetologist must be able to:
- identify and prevent the presence of life and health threatening factors (own and patient);
- remove such threatening factors in a timely manner;
- assess the condition of the patient's organs and systems according to international standards;
- carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (chest compressions, artificial respiration);
- provide first aid in accordance with the protocols of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, etc.
To acquire all the above skills, familiarization with the theory of emergency care is not enough. That is why practical courses and seminars, during which experienced doctors and trainers of international emergency centers share their knowledge and experience, are of great value to cosmetologists who really care not only about beauty, but also about the safety of their patients.
