A breast lift is a surgical correction of a prolapsed breast, or both, when the volume of the breast is preserved but the shape is lost due to sagging. Breast sagging occurs due to stretching of the skin associated with hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, due to breastfeeding, due to sudden weight loss, hypertrophy of the mammary glands, age-related tissue ptosis. The shape of the sagging breast can be significantly improved by breast plastic surgery, in which it is possible to perform not only an isolated breast lift (mastopexy), but also its combination with reduction mammoplasty or the installation of an augmenting implant.
Preparation and planning for breast lift surgery
The preparatory phase for a breast augmentation should take much longer than the operation itself, since it is necessary to discuss in detail with the patient not only the reasons why she wants a breast lift, but also the methods of the operation, and the planned end result, and possible complications .
The surgeon takes the necessary measurements, takes breast photographs, assesses the possible risks, taking into account the patient's age and her expectations from the operation, taking into account her skin quality, life history and medical history, the degree of correction needed and the amount of proposed intervention. The future shape of the breast is discussed with the patient on a computer model, the incision sites are discussed with her. The patient should be aware that the stitches after the operation will become less noticeable over time, but will not disappear completely.
On the eve of the operation, the patient undergoes a detailed diagnostic examination and consultation with a mammologist. In order to avoid a number of vascular complications, the patient should be advised to stop smoking and not taking aspirin 2 weeks before the operation; the operation is not planned on the days of menstruation. If a patient wants to go on a diet, she should adjust her weight before breast augmentation, as losing weight will negatively affect the results of a breast lift.
Breast lift methods and features of the postoperative period
The incision is made circularly around the areola and, according to the chosen technique, an additional incision for a T-shaped or L-shaped lift, most often vertically from the areola to the underbust crease. Through the incision, tissues are redistributed and sutured to the muscles, excess skin is removed, and the nipple is moved to a more effective position. A breast lift can also be performed with polypropylene threads, but it has many limiting factors and a short effect.
In parallel with a breast lift, it is possible to perform an operation to reduce it (if necessary), increase it with implants, and eliminate breast asymmetry.
The patient must carefully follow the recommendations for wearing compression underwear, exclusion of physical activity, be aware that the final results of the operation will be noticeable no earlier than six months later. In addition, the aesthetic results of a breast lift are not permanent, but change with age.
