The transverse wrinkles of the neck, also known as the rings of Venus, are represented by horizontal folds of skin that can appear at any age.
In many cases, timely prevention of the appearance of wrinkles on the neck makes it possible to delay the invasive correction of an aesthetic defect – Dr. Loredana Nigro is convinced of this.
In addition to the standard neck rejuvenation methods (dermal filler injections, botulinum toxin, hardware techniques), there are additional recommendations that patients can follow to improve correction results or prevent further aging of the neck skin.
Etiology and factors contributing to the appearance of wrinkles on the neck
Wrinkles on the neck – the result of loss of collagen and elastin, structural degradation and permanent changes in the reticular layer of the dermis, as well as thinning and loss of elasticity of the stratum corneum of the epidermis. The relatively early appearance of wrinkles in this area is also facilitated by transepidermal moisture loss, significant stretching of the skin.

An important structural component of the skin is the extracellular matrix, which consists of glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, collagen fibers and other molecules. Degradation of the extracellular matrix – the result of both chronological and photoaging of the skin. Also, the appearance and severity of neck wrinkles are affected by:
• gravity;
• flabbiness of the skin;
• fluctuations in body fat mass;
• activity of the subcutaneous muscle of the neck;
• menopause.
In the most difficult cases (for example, in the presence of excess skin), the only effective method for correcting wrinkles on the neck is surgery.
Combined Approach to Neck Rejuvenation: HA and Botulinum Toxin Technique
Minimal to moderate changes can be corrected with less invasive approaches. To achieve optimal results, according to the author, it is advisable to combine minimally invasive methods for the correction of neck wrinkles with the following adjuvant therapies.
How to deal with wrinkles on the neck: general recommendations
Prevention of neck wrinkle is important when working with young or menopausal patients. Skin protection against photoaging – an equally important stage that allows you to prolong the youthfulness of the neck.
Smoking, alcohol abuse, lack of sleep, insufficient UV protection and unbalanced diet – factors that accelerate the appearance of wrinkles on the neck, and therefore must be neutralized.
Because photoaging significantly affects the appearance of the neck, it is important to effectively protect this area from sun exposure. To do this, it is recommended to regularly apply sunscreen before going outside on the face, neck and décolleté. We also know about the negative effects of blue light on pro-collagen type I, and therefore the author recommends to his patients anti-age products that protect the skin from exposure to ultraviolet radiation of the A and B spectrum, infrared radiation and high-energy visible light.
Hormonal changes during menopause lead to a decrease in the level of collagen and elastin, as well as a deterioration in the quality of the skin in general. In order to restore the extracellular matrix, hormone replacement therapy will be effective,
Which ingredients in topical products are effective against neck wrinkles
Topical preparations can be used as an adjunct to the above methods for correcting neck wrinkles. Effective ingredients in such products are described below.
N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) increases the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and normalizes skin pigmentation. The use of NAG helps to maintain the structure, integrity, growth and repair of the extracellular matrix, as well as the dermis and stratum corneum.
Triethyl citrate is highly effective in increasing collagen synthesis in the dermis and thus preventing the deepening of neck wrinkles.
Antioxidants improve the structure and integrity of the extracellular matrix of the dermis. Vitamins – traditional components of topical preparations:
• With – increases the production of collagen types I and III;
• E – has anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects;
• combination of vitamins C and E provides maximum antioxidant protection for the skin;
• vitamin A and its derivatives, such as tretinoin, are antioxidants that stimulate collagen synthesis and inhibit collagenase activity, directly maintaining the normal state of the extracellular matrix.
In many cases, timely prevention of the appearance of wrinkles on the neck makes it possible to delay the invasive correction of an aesthetic defect.
Proamino acids such as palmitoyl glycine also suppress inflammation and increase collagen production.
Polypeptides are able to imitate matrix components and stimulate metabolic processes in the dermis, including collagen synthesis. Some herbal extracts (polyphenols and stem cells) provide a similar effect.
Why neck skin ages quickly and how to slow it down
Topical hyaluronic acid (nanohyaluronic acid) penetrates the dermal matrix and significantly reduces the appearance of fine lines .
In his practice, the author decides on the appointment of a particular therapy, based on the individual characteristics of the patient (see table 1).
