Reconstructive surgery − it is a salvage surgery that allows people with severe injuries to regain their beauty, and most importantly − health.
What experience have Israeli doctors gained since the start of the civil war in Syria, how do they work with injuries to the face and limbs, as well as the psychological aspects of the work of estet-portal.com, was told by a plastic surgeon, head of the plastic surgery department of the city hospital in Nahariya, Candidate of Medical Sciences, member of the Israeli Association of Plastic Surgeons and also a member of the International Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery (ISAPS) Leonid Kogan.
Why is Israel so advanced in military medicine?
You know, even in everyday life we face multiple injuries and burns − we know very well how to work with them and how to treat them. But naturally, during conflicts, the number of wounded increases significantly, and, as a result, we accumulate a lot of experience. It is important to note that it is calm in Israel now.
Enok Chambi: After a face transplant, a person gains a new life
Our hospital has been treating victims from Syria for the last 5 years. Everyone knows that a civil war is going on there now, and as a result, the medical service has completely disappeared, as far as we understand. Therefore, our government decided to provide humanitarian assistance, even though we do not have any diplomatic relations.
We help the patients that the Israeli army brings to us, we don't know which side they are on - but it doesn't matter to us.
Very often, not only people of military age are admitted, but also women and children, for the treatment of which we direct all our efforts.
What are the most common injuries? Gunshot wounds, burns?
Whatever you listed. But, of course, most often burns. But we don't just help the wounded. The hospital has a children's service − Once a week, a polyclinic opens and we treat children from completely different diseases. This is a great collaboration of pediatricians, pediatric neurologists and other doctors who are ready to provide assistance to anyone who needs it.
How do you deal with major facial injuries?
Of course, we provide care for patients with injuries and facial injuries. We have a department of maxillofacial, plastic surgery, as well as a specialized department for facial and neck lesions.
Fat transplantation for facial rejuvenation
And we work as a team. It is important to note that we cannot provide outpatient treatment for our patients, because they have nowhere to return, so they stay with us for a long time. Some patients spent 6 months to a year in our hospital.
Regarding limb reconstruction, do you perform vascular and nerve reconstruction?
Of course, and I just mentioned that a team of experts is working to restore the face, the same goes for the limbs. Reconstructive surgery − it's team work. We probably do not have a single patient who is treated only by doctors of one specialty.
Are there psychological aspects of working with such patients?
We have no problem with this, as we provide medical care to all people, regardless of their status, nationality and political position.
Yes, people were very scared when the hostilities had just begun, but once in the hospital, they quickly realized that they were not in danger. I think that those who underwent treatment with us returned home with extremely positive feedback.
A particularly grateful category of patients − these are kids. Children do not understand what politics and the difference in nationality are - they see a good attitude and accept it.
We also have a whole team of medical clowns who take part in, for example, painful dressings − they distract the attention of small patients, and these complex manipulations become much easier to carry out.
