Modern dermatology is currently one of the most progressively developing medical areas. Various pathological conditions of the skin are characterized by a high prevalence, as well as a significant violation of the quality of life of patients. That is why the search for new methods for diagnosing and treating skin diseases is actively continuing. The President of the Ukrainian Academy of Dermatovenereology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Dermatovenereology of the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after I.I. P. L. Shupika, co-founder of Ukrainian Medical Knowledge Hub|Dermatology Alexander Ivanovich Litus.
What diseases come to the fore in modern dermatology?
This is a rather difficult question, because any disease for a patient is important for him personally. But if we talk about the epidemiology of dermatological diseases, and what a practicing dermatologist encounters on a daily basis, then these are, of course, chronic dermatosis, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, as well as sexually transmitted infections.
What do you think is the reason for such relevance of these dermatological pathologies?
There are two aspects to this. For example, if we talk about sexually transmitted infections, the level of diagnosis and prevention has significantly increased, that is, early screening, which, as a result, increases the statistical data on the incidence. But also, unfortunately, given the environmental situation in Ukraine and not only, diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis are leading in modern dermatology in terms of the number of applications.
In your opinion, which diseases in modern dermatology should doctors pay more attention to?
As I said, any pathology is significant for the patient himself.
Given the trend in modern dermatology towards the growth of various diseases, primarily oncological, it seems to me that doctors should pay special attention to early screening and prevention of dermatological diseases.
These are, first of all, skin neoplasms - skin melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. This is atopic dermatitis, which, unfortunately, if not properly managed at an early age, can develop into a chronic disease and involve other systems and organs. Separately, it is worth mentioning psoriasis - a very relevant pathology for Ukraine today.
What are the most common mistakes doctors make when diagnosing dermatological pathologies?
First of all, the responsibility for their own health must be borne by the patients themselves! The problem of late diagnosis is exacerbated often because of their negligence. People are obliged to monitor the condition of their skin and contact a specialist in a timely manner. But, unfortunately, in our country, treatment on the Internet, turning to grandmothers and self-treatment are still applicable. As a result, we get a disease in a severe form, which is much more difficult to treat. Regarding the errors of dermatologists today, their number has significantly decreased. The reason for this was the rapid development of modern diagnostic methods, the improvement in the quality of various diagnostic systems, equipment and hardware techniques. Moreover, I am sure that in the near future the mistakes of dermatologists, thanks to regular Kyiv Dermatological Days and a new educational platform for doctors Medical Knowledge Hub | Dermatology will come to naught.
Please tell us more about screenings in modern dermatology. Why do patients need them?
Firstly, in case of any skin reactions, the patient should consult a specialist in a timely manner. Today in Ukraine there are all conditions for making a correct diagnosis. This is the use of histopathological studies, and modern research methods, such as dermatoscopy and digital dermatoscopy. Correctly established diagnosis – it is 100% correct treatment. And the right treatment – it is almost always the patient's cure.
What are the latest innovations in modern dermatology that you can highlight?
A huge number of modern drugs are registered every month in Ukraine and all over the world, which significantly expand the possibilities of treating dermatological diseases. Innovative biological therapy and proper care of problematic skin are of great importance, especially in the case of atopic dermatitis in children.
Tell our readers about the 12th Kyiv Dermatological Days conference. What is its specialty?
Starting more than six years ago, Kyiv Dermatological Days (KDD) have already become a unique event. Previously, it was a small local event for dermatologists in Kyiv. Gradually, the conference developed and today it has become an international one.
To date, more than 800 dermatologists from more than 12 countries of the world have registered at the 12th Kyiv Dermatological Days.
KDD are held in Russian, which is very important at a time when not everyone still speaks English well enough and can afford to go to such congresses abroad. This year, the highlight of our congress was the presentation of the new educational and information platform Medical Knowledge Hub Dermatology, which will allow dermatologists to gain knowledge without leaving their workplace, as well as consult with colleagues at any time or plan events for their professional self-development in the near future. MedKnowHub provides an opportunity for close communication with representatives of related specializations, since premorbid conditions are currently very important in many nosologies. The project has other unique advantages and I am absolutely sure that there will be a place for estet-portal.com.
