What is storytelling
V.P.: Storytelling – it is a strategy for life and success. What is the essence of storytelling? You must understand who you are. This is the first stage. What are you, what is your uniqueness, why the world needs you in general. It's almost like marketing, just marketing – it's just part of storytelling. And marketing has been around for 200 years, and storytelling for 70,000.
You must understand what is your uniqueness and what is your inferiority. You have to understand yourself.
You must understand what your creed is, you must understand what you believe. You must understand why you are in conflict with the world. You don’t like everything in the world around you, you overcome something, but what? What is your mission.
Next, you need to understand your path. What is your goal? Why are you at all, whatever? As a rule, people cannot answer this, it is difficult for them, but this remains the main question.
Relatively speaking, there are 4 main motives for most people. This is the booty: money, handbags, expensive things, etc. Second – it is a pleasure. Third – socialization and communication. Fourth – power. These four basic motives in animals are the same in & nbsp; some lion or wolf the same desires, but you and I are not animals. We must have higher motives, and this is where storytelling comes to the rescue. Because when you formulate what is the goal of your life, then it is much easier for you to build a path to it (to this goal) and storytelling as nothing and no one helps to do this.

Each of you understands for yourself that there is my goal, I see it, I am here now, I am like this at the moment, which means I have to go through a certain path of testing, be reborn into another person, learn something new , understand something for yourself, fight the main evil and defeat it and build a new world, change for the better and achieve that very goal. This is the essence of storytelling and this is the essence of success. If a person, nation, civilization has a great story, then they can work wonders. Our huge resource, that is, the brain, must be used for its intended purpose.
How storytelling works
V.P.: I collect funny stories and there is a wonderful story about Hunak Keel, whatever that name means. The bottom line is this. In the 13th century, the Mayan civilization lived on the Yucatan Peninsula and on this peninsula there was the city of Mayapan, which was one of the coolest cities. There was a king who ruled in the surrounding lands and he had a commander, who, in fact, was called Hunak Keel.
He was a favorite of the people, a very smart and very courageous guy. Basically, a national hero. And at some point, the king thought that Hunak Keel was so popular that he could get hooked and overthrow him. It was simply impossible to execute him, because the people love him very much and can rebel. And I had to find another way.
At that time, in the Yucatan, the Maya considered it a great honor to be sacrificed to the gods. By the way, this is another great example of a destructive story and its power. Just think about what you had to tell people so that they would sacrifice themselves of their own free will? But they thought that it was just a few seconds of suffering at the beginning and after that you are already feasting with the gods, everything is fine with you and everything is fine. And there were really a lot of people who wanted to, because it was a great honor.
And then one day the king said to Hunak Keel: "You know, I thought about it here and decided that as the best citizen of our city, tomorrow you will be sacrificed to our gods.
The Millennial Generation: The Impact of Brands on Corporate Culture
To which Hunak Keel answered him simply and briefly: "Thank you, Your Majesty, this is an honor for me." He understood that it was impossible to jump off this case. And Hunak Keel had to be sacrificed.
Sacrifice was then offered in the following way. Not far from Mayapan was another great city of the Maya, it is still there today, which is called Chichen Itza. In this city, Chichen Itza, there was and is a huge well of natural origin, which was called "sacred cenote. People were led there, who had to be sacrificed, and rituals were already performed there, prayers were read and, as usual, kamla and then threw a person into the water.
It all happened at dawn, then the priests left, returned at noon, and if someone else was swimming on the surface, it meant that the gods did not accept the sacrifice. But, as practice showed, usually the gods accepted everyone, and there was no need to pull anyone out.
And then, it means, they bring the favorite of the people - Khunak Keel there, they pray, perform rituals and throw them into the water; he falls into the water and then everything goes completely wrong, because he abruptly emerges and says: “People, I just talked to the gods, pull me out, they conveyed important news.” The priests were shocked, because the gods had never transmitted news before, well, you need to find out what it is. They pulled him out and asked: “What, what did the gods say to you?” And he replied, "They appointed me as the new Mayapan king."
How to build a successful personal brand
It is clear that for the Mayan people the word of the gods – the law and they held it with great triumph in Mayapan Hunak Keel, he sat on the throne, simply executed the former king without a fuss. After that, he gathered an army, went to Chichen Itza and razed them to the ground. Just like this.
You see, all these people they themselves are hostages of their own story, because they themselves have been convincing people for hundreds of years that this is all really true.
But what's the point? Here we see an example of amazing storytelling. In one second, he went from victim to king. This is how storytelling works.
What a "good storyteller" he is
V.P.: You need to have a good imagination and be brave. When you see a cool story that can change the world for the better, it always runs into resistance from a huge number of people. People are afraid of change, so they are not able to perceive this story properly. It is for this reason that any storytelling hero in the history of mankind has always overcome a bunch of some kind of obstacles. Like, for example, Columbus, who walked around the yards for 18 years and tried to knock out money for the expedition.
The bottom line is that we, humanity, have gone from caves to the cosmos of the Internet and microbiology in 10,000 years only thanks to storytelling. Because here people live for themselves and don’t touch anyone, when suddenly another storyteller comes to them, “overwrites” them a chic story and leads them further. And they change the world because they want to live in the story they were told.
But there will certainly be resistance to overcome in the beginning. A good storyteller must be brave.
Communication trends: who do they want to see and hear now
Our new president – This is the best example of good storytelling. Classical and beautiful by all canons of the story. What does it look like? When he and his colleagues made the TV series Servant of the People, they came up with a story in that moment that ordinary people wanted to participate in. Why? Because he played according to the principle of Cinderella: each of you can become president. That is why, during his inaugural address, he said, "We are all presidents." He has really smart storytellers on his team.
