Trichomoniasis is the most common sexually transmitted disease of the urinary tract caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. According to the World Health Organization, about 10% of the world's population suffer from trichomoniasis, it is registered annually in 170 million people.

First of all, trichomoniasis is dangerous with serious consequences in the form of complications, such as infertility and pregnancy pathologies. In men, the main habitat of trichomoniasis is the urethra, seminal vesicles and prostate, in women the vagina. But we must remember that the first time Trichomonas enters the body, it always causes urethritis. Infection occurs through contact with a sick person or a carrier of the infection (through sexual contact). The incubation period is 1-4 weeks.

Symptoms of trichomoniasis in women

  • burning and itching, hyperemia of the external genital organs;
  • Vaginal discharge (yellow, sometimes foul-smelling);
  • pain during intercourse;
  • pain when urinating.

At the same time, the vaginal mucosa bleeds easily, is sharply hyperemic or covered with purulent secretions

Symptoms of trichomoniasis in men

In most cases, this disease is asymptomatic in men.

Sometimes, the following symptoms may occur:

  • pain when urinating and discharge from the urethra;
  • if the prostate gland is affected, symptoms of prostatitis are observed.

Complications of trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis can cause inflammation of the perineum and vulva with swelling of the labia in women. Rare complications include cystitis, skineitis, and bartholinitis. The most common complication of trichomoniasis in men is - prostatitis.
Diagnosis of trichomoniasis

Diagnosis of trichomoniasis urogenitalis based on laboratory tests for T. vaginalis, such as microscopic examination of a fresh unstained specimen, microscopy of a specimen stained with 1% methylene blue, Gram, and Romanowsky Giemsa, molecular biological research methods and culture research.

Trichomoniasis treatment

Treatment of trichomoniasis must necessarily be individually selected and comprehensive. It is important to bring it to the end, since untreated trichomoniasis can become chronic and appear only after a few years.

Treatment for trichomoniasis involves oral antitrichomoniasis medications. Topical treatment such as vaginal suppositories or tablets in case of trichomoniasis is ineffective.
Usually, the patient is prescribed treatment in addition to antitrichomonas drugs, such as general strengthening drugs, immunotherapy, physiotherapy, prostate massage, urethral instillations.
What to do if you have diagnosed with trichomoniasis?

First of all, you must inform your sexual partner(s) about your illness, convince him/her to undergo examination and treatment (preferably at the same time). It is important to remember that the asymptomatic course of the disease does not reduce the risk of complications.
Trichomoniasis and pregnancy

Trichomoniasis can cause premature birth or low birth weight babies. Pregnant women are advised to undergo treatment immediately after the first symptoms appear and the diagnosis is confirmed. Experts say that the drug metronidazole can be taken after the first trimester of pregnancy.
