The mucous membrane of the mouth is reflexively affected by receptors from various parts of the stomach, intestines and other organs of the digestive system. Researchers have long noticed that in diseases such as, for example, various types of gastritis, colitis, stomach ulcers & nbsp; or duodenum, the mucous membrane of the mouth changes. The severity of these changes directly depends on the severity of the listed diseases – increases during exacerbations and practically disappears during remissions. Knowledge of the manifestations of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract on the condition of the oral mucosa will help with their timely diagnosis.
How does the oral mucosa react to the condition of the stomach
According to scientists, the secretory functions of the stomach and salivary glands are very similar and closely related. So, for example, a violation of the acid-forming function in the stomach and an exacerbation of an ulcer are closely related with pathological processes on the oral mucosa and a decrease in its reactivity. In addition, with a stomach ulcer, the level of histamine in the blood increases and rashes appear in the oral cavity at the same time.
Among the manifestations of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, which are reflected in the oral mucosa, the following are noted:
- mucosal discoloration,
- salivation disorders,
- appearance of ulcers.
It must be remembered that all the listed changes in the state of the oral mucosa can be due to many reasons – these are both fungal diseases and various infections, so additional studies are needed for a final diagnosis.
Manifestations of ulcers on the oral mucosa
Intestinal dysbacteriosis is manifested by a deficiency of B vitamins, aphthous stomatitis develops on the oral mucosa. Moreover, the changes that occur in the mouth with this form of stomatitis are absolutely similar to the processes that occur in the intestines. In addition, almost every second patient with peptic ulcers (gastric ulcer, colitis) has aphthous stomatitis, and recurrent.
Reasons for changing the color of the oral mucosa
The most common causes of discoloration of the oral mucosa are diseases of the digestive system such as enterocolitis, colitis, exacerbations of stomach ulcers. They are combined with such pathological phenomena in the oral cavity as glossitis, stomatitis, gingivitis. The more often, more extensively and more aggravated diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the more acutely painful phenomena appear on the oral mucosa. It becomes hyperemic, and the chronic course of the process determines the cyanotic color. Patients complain of a burning sensation and pain while eating. If colitis or ulcer remission occurs, inflammation in the mouth also disappears.
Peculiarities of salivation in case of inflammation of the oral mucosa
According to a number of studies, gastric and duodenal ulcers affect the functioning of the minor salivary glands, causing functional changes. At the initial stages of the disease and during its exacerbations, the patient has hypersalivation. Then, about a year after the onset of the ulcer, hyposalivation develops and patients complain of dry mouth.
It should be noted that pathological processes that develop on the oral mucosa in parallel with exacerbations of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract do not require special therapy. Against the background of the mandatory treatment of the underlying disease, the patient is recommended to rinse the mouth with antiseptic solutions and anti-inflammatory drugs, and also be sure to prescribe drugs containing B vitamins.
