Think you don't have enough time to exercise that will benefit your health? A new study shows that just 5 minutes of running a day can reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

Researchers analyzed information on more than 55,000 Americans aged 18 to 100. About a quarter of the participants were runners (they reported the duration, distance, frequency, and speed of their runs), while the rest were non-runners. Regular joggers were 45% less likely to die from heart disease over the next 15 years and 30% less likely to die from any health-related cause than non-runners, according to medical surveys. research.

When "runners" were divided into five groups based on the length, distance and speed of their runs, to the researchers' surprise, all groups had the same reduction in risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. For example, those who ran less than 51 minutes per week (5-10 minutes per day) had the same reduced risk of death from CVD as those who ran more than 176 minutes per week.

The results remained relevant even after adjusting for the effects of confounding factors (age, smoking and alcohol use, high blood pressure, etc.). "Because time is one of the biggest barriers to physical activity, this study could motivate more people to work on themselves to improve their health," – says researcher Dak-Chul Lee, Iowa State University, USA. "For people with limited time, running is the best option in terms of time efficiency." The study also found that "runners" live an average of three years longer than non-runners.
