For us, there is no question of tipping in a cafe or restaurant. Leave a small amount on top of the bill for the waiter as a thank you for the service – The usual thing. But such a manifestation of satisfaction in a clinic or beauty salon for some reason causes discomfort and confusion for many in our country. What if a tip offends a cosmetologist? Or will the hairdresser be fined?
And how to leave a tip – to the administrator at the counter, on the mirror or tossed into the pocket of your bathrobe? Estet-portal.com conducted an exclusive survey: how clients of salons and clinics usually behave: it is appropriate to leave a tip in gratitude to the master.
Tipping as a thank you to the master: all the nuances
In America and Europe, it is customary to leave a tip for an employee of a salon or clinic in the amount of 10-20% (and even 25%) of the cost of the procedure. As it turned out, clients of salons in our country behave somewhat differently.
A lot depends on the category of salon. Thus, more than 60% of clients of clinics and premium-class salons leave tips for masters and doctors. Visitors to business class salons behave more reservedly – every third person leaves a tip there. In general, according to clients, tips are an encouragement for the master, a bonus that should be left in case of satisfaction with the quality of the procedure. And only 10% of Ukrainians are sure that tips – the norm, and do not leave a tip for beauty treatments – incorrect.
Complex «master» or a tip as a secret gratitude to the master
Tip sizes also vary. Some clients leave a fixed amount, regardless of the cost of the service. Some people just don't take change. But most clients of Ukrainian salons focus on the professionalism and level of the master more than on the cost of the procedure. There is often a personal moment here: we are afraid to offend a highly qualified doctor or eminent hairdresser with a small bill.
The more modest the service, the less often the tip....
Regardless of whether we came for a consultation or we are doing an expensive procedure. But at the same time, in our mentality, there is a deep fear of seeming "master". Paying not according to the price list, we feel embarrassed, fearing to offend the master. That is why tips are very often replaced by gifts of useful or just cute little things: from a bag of good coffee to a designer handbag.
The habit of giving thanks secretly (this is by analogy with the shamefulness of “bribes”) is connected with another of our features – in the overwhelming majority of cases, we express gratitude to the master behind the closed door of the office. Less than 5% of visitors give tips to the master through the administrator. Most of us prefer to put the bill in the pocket of the master's dressing gown or leave it lying lonely on the mirror.
Don't be afraid to encourage openly!
Employees of salons and clinics in 95% of cases welcome tips, perceiving them as a material expression of sincere gratitude. And themselves, turning out to be clients of salons and clinics, out of solidarity with colleagues in the shop, they also generously leave a tip.
Our mini-study suggests the following conclusions.
For client. There is nothing wrong with leaving a small amount as an expression of appreciation for a quality service that makes us more beautiful and happier. This is – the norm of behavior all over the world, and the likelihood that you will offend an employee of the salon – negligible.
For the subject of the beauty industry. As part of the undeniably great trend of improving the quality of service, we must form a culture of consumption. Help the client feel comfortable in your salon or clinic!
We recommend that you place a small reminder of salon etiquette on your website and on your social network page. She will unobtrusively acquaint visitors with the unspoken rules of conduct so that when they come to you, a person feels as knowledgeable as possible – which means confident and comfortable.
