Research by scientists has shown that people whose dental condition requires constant visits to the dentist's office are four times more likely to suffer from visual impairment than those who are endowed by nature with healthy teeth.

Age-related macular degeneration occurs when the teeth are damaged, which negatively affects vision. Previous research by scientists only showed an association between poor oral health and an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Scientists have tried to determine why these links exist. They concluded that some of the risk factors are similar, including smoking and drinking large amounts of alcohol. When such risk factors were considered, the correlation still existed, although it was absent altogether among women.

According to most researchers, gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. However, it can be prevented (for most people) with proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
