How to whiten teeth at home?

The home teeth whitening kits contain bleach solutions that are stronger than those sold in over-the-counter stores.

Teeth whitening kits at home include:

1. Custom-fitted flexible plastic material plates. These plates cost in the order of a hundred dollars and have several advantages:

  • they ensure that the bleach is in contact with the teeth for maximum effect;
  • they prevent the saliva from mixing with the clarifying solution (this reduces its concentration and, accordingly, its effectiveness);
  • They minimize the chance of bleach getting on your gums, which can cause irritation.

2. Clarifier solutions are either pre-filled into the plates or stored in syringes and added to the plates immediately prior to use. In many cases, the dentist can adjust the concentration of the clarifier and add desensitizing agents. In general, a home whitening kit contains enough gel for two weeks of use for a year, plus 1- or 2-day doses to maintain results every 4-6 months.

How do dentists whiten teeth

Philips Nite White and Day White ACP: These are the only at-home teeth whitening products that contain amorphous calcium phosphate (CAP), enamel restorer, and desensitizing potassium nitrate and fluoride. The Nite White system can contain different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide for night or day use. Consult your dentist to find out which concentration is right for you.

Cost: $200-$400.

Philips Nite White Turbo: This is the fastest-acting Nite White system, featuring a chemically accelerated 6% mint flavored hydrogen peroxide solution. It is intended to be used at night or 2-4 hours twice a day, and 1-2 hours a day if you are sensitive to bleach.

Cost: $200-$400.

Philips Zoom! Weekender Kit: This fast-acting whitening system consists of a 6% hydrogen peroxide gel and an excipient that promotes deep penetration of the brightener. The Weekender Kit is intended for overnight use, 2 to 4 hours twice a day, or 1 to 2 hours a day in case of sensitivity to bleach.

Cost: $200-$400.

Opalescence by Ultradent: Formulated with a viscous urea peroxide that can remain on teeth for long periods of time, Opalescence gel also contains a proprietary desensitizing blend of potassium nitrate and fluoride. Pre-placed in syringes, the gel is injected into individually matched plates before each use. There are 4 concentrations of carbamide peroxide for day or night use. Opalescence kits come in mint, melon, and flavorless formulas. The best results appear after 10 days of use.

The average cost of Opalescence bleach is between $150 and $200.

Opalescence Trèswhite Supreme: This innovative all-in-one system is designed for those who need a quick, convenient and relatively inexpensive whitener without having to wait for custom made plates. Many people use them when traveling or just before an important business meeting or social event. Trèswhite has a two-layer plate system that guarantees automatic alignment. Feed plates initially contain an inner membrane-like plate containing a 10% hydrogen peroxide solution and containing the same mixtures of potassium nitrate and fluoride as used in individually prepared Opalescence system plates. The application time of Trèswhite is 30 to 60 minutes once a day.

Cost: $75 to $100.
