A toothache can piss anyone off. If a tooth hurts, a person is ready to do anything to stop this terrible pain. However, the consequences of treating the symptoms, rather than the causes of the disease, are often extremely unpleasant and dangerous. Therefore, each person should know what periostitis is, what consequences self-treatment of periostitis can lead to. What symptoms of periostitis appear in a patient and how dentists treat periostitis, as well as an abscess, phlegmon and what absolutely cannot be done in case of purulent-inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region will be discussed in the article prepared for you Estet-portal.
"Everything needs to be done on time" – Phrase related directly to dentistry. Fearing dentists, we often try to cure a toothache that has appeared at home. Often this consists in taking analgin, rinsing with soda and using different pastes for self-sealing. Particularly sophisticated patients also resort to the use of heating pads and tooth drops.
What does such self-treatment lead to? The most common purulent-inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region are periostitis, abscess, phlegmon. Odontogenic periostitis is also known as "flux". Caries, its complications and the lack of adequate treatment cause the inflammatory process to pass into the periosteum of the alveolar process of the upper and lower jaw.
Clinical picture of periostitis
This process is manifested by constant pain of a diffuse nature. Often it has a pulsating character and radiates throughout the trigeminal nerve. Depending on the localization, soreness is also characteristic when opening the mouth, chewing, swallowing. On examination, hyperemia of the mucous membrane, edema, smoothness of the transitional fold, slight tooth mobility are observed.
Periostitis treatment
The treatment of periostitis should be comprehensive. The surgical solution is aimed at preserving or removing the causative tooth. Basically, single-rooted teeth with well-passable canals, amenable to filling, are subject to preservation. If there is destruction of bone tissue near the root apex, it is recommended to resect the apex. Preservation of multi-rooted teeth causes a lot of discussion. The disease is quite severe and requires bed rest. The patient is unable to work for 5-7 days. Carrying weights is contraindicated.
Failure to comply with the regime entails serious consequences.
Abscess – this is a purulent limited inflammation of the subcutaneous fatty tissue. The clinic and treatment are similar to periostitis, the difference is only a longer period of drainage.
Phlegmon – diffuse purulent-inflammatory disease resulting from the inflammatory process in the jaw. Its danger lies in the fact that pus is not limited by anything and can penetrate into different parts of the face, reaching the mediastinum.
In the case of purulent-inflammatory diseases, it is strictly prohibited:
- Apply warm compresses. This helps to spread the process. Apply any bandages. The bandage is effective only for a broken head, it has no healing properties.
- Taking antibiotics without first consulting a doctor. Antibiotics are taken strictly according to the scheme. Their thoughtless use can cause resistance.
- Taking pain medication 3 hours before going to the doctor. This will make it difficult to diagnose.
- Prescribing or withdrawing medications at your own discretion. You should not rely on the stories of acquaintances, even if they had a similar situation.
