For many centuries, eyebrows have always been influenced by fashion and dictated new beauty trends of their time. In some cases, they were the most daring statements of beauty. Currently, there are many ways to give the original shape of the eyebrows, but all the "models" have been invented many times before us.

We invite you on an exciting journey through the history of eyebrows!

Ancient Egypt

As we can see on the bust of Nefertiti, in ancient Egypt, women wore make-up around the eyes and arched eyebrows, elongated and darkened with mineral-based powders. Such makeup was a tribute to the Gods, they believed that he protected them from evil spirits and diseases. One of the most interesting facts about the history of eyebrows in ancient Egypt: when a domestic cat died, everyone who lived in that house had to shave off their eyebrows as a sign of mourning. If the dog died, it was necessary to shave from head to toe.

The Sumerians

Like the Egyptians, Sumerian women liked to emphasize their eyebrows, making them thicker, fatter, arching in the center. To achieve this fashionable effect, a thick mixture of soot and galena dissolved in animal fat was used.

Ancient Greece

In ancient Greece, women were not as independent as in ancient Egypt. Therefore, married ladies and their daughters did not use makeup at all, as the Greeks were preoccupied with the idea of female purity. At that time, only courtesans used cosmetics. But regardless of social class, it was considered fashionable at the time to have a unibrow.

Ancient Rome

The women of Ancient Rome had much more energy and freedom than Greek women. Famous poets and writers sang the beauty of Roman ladies in their works. Just as in Greece, the unibrow was highly valued in Rome. She was a sign of high intelligence. One of the most interesting facts about eyebrows in ancient Rome was the use of fake eyebrows made from the hair of a dead goat. Wood resin was used to fix facial hair. It would probably be fun to shoot them.

Victorian era

During this era, women's make-up was condemned and only considered by prostitutes. Ladies of high society left their eyebrows pristine and quite thick.

1920s

Inspired by movie stars like Clara Bow, women of the 20s sported straight and very thin eyebrows that gave them a brooding and dramatic look. They used Vaseline to give their brows shine and accent. For the first time in history, access to sales of cosmetic products was opened. By the way, it was at this time that ladies began to imitate artists and celebrities, copying their makeup and hairstyles.

1930s

Ladies from the 30s still wore thin, dark, shiny and well-plucked eyebrows. However, in addition to straight lines, they began to wear high eyebrows in the form of rounded arches. Famous actresses of the time, such as Greta Garbo and Jean Harlow, set the beauty trends of the era by wearing arched eyebrows for added drama.

1950s

In the 50s fashion icons were clearly defined: Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and dear Audrey Hepburn. They wore thick, dark eyebrows and highlighted them with a pencil for a bolder look. During these years, the eyebrows became the main component of the face.

1960s

In these years, a new trend of wearing eyebrows began with Sophia Loren. Her famous technique involved shaving her entire brows off and then painstakingly applying super-short brows with a pencil. This technique provided a striking effect, however, was completely unnatural. Audrey Hepburn's natural style trend also remained a priority.

1970s

In the 70s, the hippie movement was popular and of course this influenced the wearing of natural eyebrows. A more natural style was also popularized by famous actresses of the time: Lauren Hutton and Ali McGraw.

1980s

We all know Brooke Shields' famous eyebrows – they are undoubtedly one of the most famous eyebrows throughout the ages. Thick, untidy eyebrows, sloppy look, imitated with powders and pencils.

1990s

If you're coming of age around this time, you should remember the super-thin brows of Pamela Anderson and Drew Barrymore. Of course, this was not the only trend. This is the era of eyebrows of all shapes and sizes, with tweezing popular at the same time.

Modernity

Among all the variety of fashionable eyebrows, we can observe that the main trends are repeated. After thin lines, we return to thick, lush eyebrows with natural arches. Fortunately, we should not spend too much time with our tweezers, but we should not throw them far, because abrupt changes in trends, mores and tastes lead us to the well-forgotten old again and again.
