Как увольнение влияет на состояние здоровья

In the context of the crisis, many people are left without work. Waves of cuts and layoffs are rolling around the world. But many people do not even think about how losing a job can affect their health. Today we will tell you about the dangers of unemployment to your health.

Developing asthma due to fear of losing a job

Scientists from the University of Düsseldorf are sure that not even the very fact of dismissal, but just the fear that this may happen leads to a deterioration in health. Last September, they published a study that found that the fear of being fired significantly increased the risk of developing asthma.

More than seven thousand people took part in the study during 2009-2011. They were all asked to rate, on a percentage scale from zero to one hundred, the likelihood that they could lose their jobs in the next two years. During this period, 105 people in the control group were found to have asthma.

An analysis of the data obtained during the study suggests that the risk of developing asthma in people who were most afraid of being unemployed increased by 60%. The findings of this study are supported by earlier studies that linked the risk of asthma to psychological stress.

Big problems

If the fear of being fired causes such problems, then what happens to health after being fired? A group of scientists from the State University of New York worried about this. In a study, they found that losing a job increased the likelihood of health problems by 83%.

The author of the study Keith Strally says that, first of all, left without the main source of income, people ignore going to the doctor and endure until the last, even if they know that they are sick. Also, people experience the stress of being fired, which is fraught with:

  • decreased immunity;
  • disruption of the cardiovascular system;
  • deterioration of the body's ability to fight viruses and infections;
  • obese;
  • development of diabetes.

Scientists explain this by the fact that people experiencing the stress of being fired stop properly monitoring their diet, do not exercise and forget about disease prevention.

What to do

Of course, losing your job can affect your health. But you need to try to make sure that problems with work do not turn into health problems. Remember that health cannot be bought. That is why we offer you some simple tips to help you overcome the stress of being fired.

  1. Get busy. You should not lie all day on the couch and think about how bad you feel. Think about your hobby, meet friends, do a general cleaning in the apartment – it doesn't matter what exactly you will do, the main thing is that you do it.
  2. After you have calmed down and realized that not everything is so bad, you can move on to looking for a job. Create a resume and post it on job search sites, send it to employers you are interested in, look for vacancies on the labor exchange.
  3. Don't put off your job search. Remember that the longer you sit idle, the less likely you are to get a job similar to the previous one.
  4. Try to retrain. Another interesting option. It is never too late to study, and if finances allow you, then you can try to choose an occupation to your liking and retrain.

While losing your job can be bad for your health, remember that it all depends on your attitude. Do not forget that you are able to withstand everything that life sends. So take care of yourself and your health.
