Frontitis or frontal sinusitis has become one of the most common diseases in the world over the past 20 years. Every year, 15 percent of the world's population become hostages of this disease. Doctors state: over the past seven years, the number of such  patients has tripled, and in 10% of them the disease proceeds in a chronic form.

This disturbing trend cannot but cause concern. Frontitis («frons»   translated from Latin means «forehead», «itis» — inflammation) is dangerous because the inflamed frontal paranasal sinuses are located very close to the brain. And this threatens with such a formidable complication as meningitis.

Frontitis: retribution for a frivolous attitude to rhinitis

The frontal sinuses located above the eyebrows are connected to the nose by the frontonasal canal. Its distinctive feature — narrowness and curvature. If, due to inflammation or swelling, it "overlaps", then the outflow of contents from the sinus is disturbed and stagnation occurs, which serves as a medium for all kinds of bacteria. The reasons for this can be different, ranging from inflamed adenoids to sports injuries. But more often it is rhinitis that has not been treated in time. Although frontal sinusitis often manifests itself as a complication after suffering scarlet fever, diphtheria, influenza, and even SARS.

Risk factors for frontal sinusitis:

  • violation of the structure of the nasal cavity;
  • Neoplasms in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses;
  • upper respiratory diseases;
  • allergies, rhinitis;
  • poor immunity.

Acute frontal sinusitis is manifested by severe head pain in the forehead. Since the frontal sinuses are close to the eye sockets, photophobia or   pain in the eyes.
Against the background of elevated temperature, general weakness is noted. And at the same time, abundant discharge from the nose occurs: first — serous, then — serous-purulent

With chronic frontal sinusitis, the symptoms are more blurred: the intensity of the pain decreases, but it seems to spread throughout the head, breathing becomes difficult, and the sense of smell & nbsp; getting worse.

How to pacify frontitis: treatment at home

There are two types of treatment for sinusitis — conservative and surgical. If you start treatment on time, at the initial stage of the disease, you will not even need to take medication. Simple methods of treatment at home will help.

Washing clears the nasal cavity of mucous formations. The same procedure can be carried out for rhinitis, first clearing the nasal passages with a syringe or vasoconstrictor.

For washing, various  solutions and herbal infusions are used.
Salt solution (1 tsp sea or ordinary salt per 1 liter of boiled water) promotes the outflow of pathogenic contents from the nasal cavity and sinuses. Rinse throughout the day.
St. John's wort (1 teaspoon of herb in 1 glass of water) has a bactericidal effect. Rinse the sinuses with warm decoction three times a day. For this purpose, you can also use the herb of chamomile, string, calendula, eucalyptus leaves,
Steam inhalation is one of the effective therapeutic methods, but it can only be used if the patient has no temperature.

Inhalation with potato vapours. Cover with a towel over a pot of boiled potatoes and breathe it in pairs for 10 minutes. Similarly, you can inhale with bay leaves, after boiling them in a small amount of water and then breathing over them for 5 minutes.
Warming up. Apply a compress soaked in warm water to the frontal sinuses. Cover with a towel on top and put a heating pad on it for 15 minutes. Do it twice a day.

Massage in the area of the frontal sinuses promotes a rush of blood to them, which helps to relieve inflammation.
If there is no improvement after the procedures performed, you should immediately consult a doctor who will prescribe an adequate treatment for the condition.
