Modern people are much more afraid of pain than those who lived on this Earth many years ago. This phenomenon has nothing to do with a sharp decrease in the pain threshold and even with a mutation of the human body, the reason for this lies in psychology. We are so accustomed to comfort that at the slightest pain, we instantly drink painkillers. However, there is a way in which it is not at all necessary to resort to the use of medicines, because thanks to it it is possible to outwit your own brain and stop feeling pain.

Look at the body part that is bothering you

After being injured, a person usually reacts violently to it and thinks only about how painful and unpleasant it is for him. But instead of panicking, you should try to turn on the logic, carefully examine the injured place and soberly assess the severity of the damage.

The scientists conducted a test using a mirror and an infrared laser, which they used to "burn" the right hand of each subject. Due to the fact that when looking in the mirror, the participants in the experiment saw only their left hand, which was not exposed to the laser, they did not react too violently to the pain, which gradually subsided, because they knew that everything was in order with their limbs.

Researchers still cannot give an unambiguous answer to the question of how effective contemplation of one's own injury is for pain relief, but whatever one may say – a sound assessment of the situation is much better than hysteria.

Use caffeine

With the approach of spring, we are awakened by the desire to throw off everything eaten from the winter months. We reluctantly tear our body off the couch and start working out hard to get in shape. After such physical exertion, the muscles begin to ache out of habit, the back refuses to unbend, and the arms hang awkwardly. But do not rush to ask someone to shoot you, because you can get rid of this torment with the help of caffeine.

In the experiment, the researchers gave participants in the first group a caffeine tablet, while drinking one capsule was equivalent to drinking two cups of coffee. The second group was offered a supposedly anesthetic drug, which was actually a placebo. After that, the subjects were waiting for a workout in the gym, which lasted all day. As a result, the participants in the first group, who took caffeine, felt quite normal the next day and were even ready to repeat the classes, unlike the participants in the second group.

Laugh

According to psychologists, laughter is the best medicine for pain. Naturally, it will not help to get rid of the tumor or stop the bleeding, but with a sense of humor it is possible to reduce the pain.

Laughter helps the brain produce endorphins, the hormones of happiness that can have an analgesic effect. Thus, by laughing at a critical moment, you will suffer less.

Scientists conducted tests in which they divided the volunteers into two groups. The participants of the first group were offered to watch funny Internet videos, while the other part of the subjects was busy watching boring popular science programs. It turned out that people who laughed at funny videos felt much less pain than those who watched serious programs.

Just 15 minutes of laughter is enough to reduce pain by 10%. But only sincere laughter is effective, to the point of colic, when the air is inhaled deeply.

Reassure yourself that pain – it's good

Some people don't take neuro-linguistic programming seriously, while others think that such a method – quite efficient. But no one will argue with the fact that the pain of pain is different, and in order to prove it, the scientists decided to conduct an experiment.

The researchers gathered volunteers who agreed to have tourniquets applied so that blood flow was restricted. Participants in the experiment had to endure such unpleasant sensations for as long as they could. At the same time, some volunteers were told that their limbs could suffer as a result of such an experiment, while others were assured that this was a useful procedure for strengthening muscles. A few minutes after the participants' hands were bandaged with a tourniquet, those who were sure it was dangerous were writhing in pain, unlike the "not intimidated" ones.

Thus, little lies can raise the pain threshold.

Look at something terrible

For a moment, imagine that you are in the dentist's chair, contemplate the tools that the doctor will soon begin to use in your mouth and feel how you gradually begin to be covered with cold sweat. In order to get distracted and stop panicking, you look away and see cute pictures on the wall with beautiful landscapes and cats. While trying to show concern for the patients, the doctor did not realize that horror photos would be much more effective images.

Scientists here decided to get to the bottom of the truth and conduct an experiment. The subjects were shown slides depicting people in various life situations – from neutral to catastrophic. Before starting the viewing, the volunteers had to dip their hand into a tank filled with ice-cold water. So, when viewing unpleasant pictures, the pain was much better tolerated.

So you shouldn't run away from the doctor's office if his office is decorated with pictures of zombies and other monsters, maybe this person knows something about psychology.
