Suffering from a lack of self-confidence? American psychologists have experimentally proven that by adopting a certain body position, we can influence self-confidence and significantly increase self-esteem.

71 students took part in the experiment of psychologists at the University of Texas at Austin. The subjects were seated at computers. Half of the subjects were instructed to sit up straight with their shoulders back and their chests forward, while the rest were instructed to slouch and sit with their heads down. Having fixed the initial position, the subjects had to describe their own traits that could relate to their future professional activity - three advantages and three disadvantages, and then answer questions that evaluate them as future specialists.

It turned out that students with a straight back position were much more confident and rated themselves much higher. Those who stooped on the instructions of the experimenters rated their own merits lower and, answering the test questions, were not sure of the adequacy of their own conclusions.

"Good posture promotes self-confidence and creates a positive attitude," the authors of the experiment comment. "It also makes people be more categorical in their judgments - both positive and negative."
