Seeing the world around us is so familiar to the vast majority of sighted people that not everyone thinks how rich they are. In addition to sight, we can cognize the world with the help of hearing or during palpation. But only vision can give us the opportunity to see light and shadow, to distinguish colors, emotions on people's faces. Therefore, vision problems must be solved immediately, as soon as there is discomfort in the eye area, itching, burning, redness, visual clarity has fallen, and appropriate treatment methods should be carried out immediately. If the picture during eye contact is distorted, blurred – This is a sign of astigmatism. Treatment methods for astigmatism allow you to choose the appropriate method for varying degrees of development of the disease or individual tolerance.

Astigmatism: causes and symptoms

Astigmatism is a vision disorder, the inability of the eyes to reproduce a clear image due to a distorted sphericity of the lens or cornea. Ideally, when the light beam is refracted through the cornea (lens) and focused on the retina as an image point, and with astigmatism, a straight focal line is obtained instead of a point. Therefore, one part of the image may be distorted, another may be blurry, and another – clear. The cornea can have different degrees of curvature, and, accordingly, the types of astigmatism are distinguished from the length of the resulting line on the retina. Many people are already born with a slight curvature of the cornea – up to 0.5 D. Such indicators are invisible to the quality of vision, therefore they are considered natural (physiological). If the length of the optical line goes beyond the boundaries of 1D, this already requires medical attention to correct vision using various astigmatism treatments. The causes of this disease are not clear to scientists. Basically, the signs of astigmatism are congenital and acquired (inherited). It appears most often in early childhood, which requires special attention from parents and a doctor (pediatrician and ophthalmologist) and the prompt use of the necessary methods for treating astigmatism. Also, the causes may be head injuries, surgeries.

    Symptoms of astigmatism
  • eyes get tired very quickly, watery;
  • headaches;
  • loss of clarity of vision;
  • the quality of vision is deteriorating;
redness around the eyes.

What is important: special attention is paid to the diagnosis of astigmatism, because the patient may misinterpret his sensations. A person can only complain about a drop in quality, visual acuity. To determine whether it is really astigmatism, the degree of development of the disease and the axis of image distortion, one examination by an ophthalmologist is not enough, you should undergo a comprehensive examination using a computer and various methods in order to use the correct methods of treating astigmatism.

Modern methods of astigmatism treatment and vision correction

The methods of treatment and correction are selected depending on the degree of development of astigmatism. First of all, these are glasses – the most common method. Glasses for vision correction are required with cylindrical lenses, they are called "complex". The inconvenience is that they need to be changed frequently as astigmatism develops. When wearing glasses, inconveniences of this nature may occur: fogging, slipping, pollution. Active way of life, physical activity is impossible.

Another conservative treatment is lenses. Toric lenses are used, special for the correction of vision with astigmatism. Contact lenses are used only up to the degree of astigmatism 3D, then other correction methods are used.

Also, a small degree of refraction of the eye can be corrected with the help of laser correction of astigmatism (only for adults – from 18 years old). A cold-type laser beam vaporizes the thinnest layer of the cornea, changing the bulge and curvature. If astigmatism goes into a neglected form for more than 6 D, surgical intervention is indicated – astigmatomy. The surgeon makes arcuate micro-incisions on the cornea to weaken the desired meridians and correct astigmatism.
