Otoplasty: the key to beautiful and neat ears

Modern plastic surgery can deal with almost any lack of appearance. And ears are no exception. One of the most popular plastic surgeries in our time is otoplasty. Today Estet-portal will tell you about it.

Understanding the terms: otoplasty and protruding ears

First, it's worth understanding the terms. So, otoplasty – This is a plastic surgery aimed at correcting the auricle. It is often used to correct auricles, as well as getting rid of protruding ears.

Otoplasty is divided into two main subspecies:
1. Aesthetic otoplasty. Aimed at changing the shape of the auricle.
2. Reconstructive otoplasty. To be carried out in the complete or partial absence of the auricle, respectively, for its renewal.

Protruding ears – this is a congenital anatomical feature of the auricle, which is accompanied by an increase in the angle of placement of the auricle, which is why the ears have a protruding appearance. To correct it, otoplasty is used.

Basically, otoplasty, as an operation for protruding ears, is recommended to be performed in childhood from about six years of age. This is due to the fact that the presence of such a congenital problem can cause psychological trauma in the child.

Indications and contraindications for otoplasty

Like any other plastic surgery, otoplasty has a number of indications and contraindications for its implementation. Among the main indications for otoplasty are:

  • irregularly shaped ears;
  • protruding ears;
  • smoothness of the surface of the auricle and curl;
  • complete or partial absence of the auricle.

Things are even simpler with contraindications. Thus, the main contraindications for otoplasty are:

  • poor blood clotting;
  • oncological diseases;
  • severe malformations of internal organs, such as the heart;
  • diabetes mellitus and other autoimmune diseases.

There are also a number of temporary contraindications. Among them are viral, colds and infectious diseases, as well as chronic diseases in the acute stage and skin diseases in the area of otoplasty.

Procedure for Ear Correction Surgery

Before the operation, it is necessary to pass tests. If no contraindications are identified, the specialist sets the date for the operation. As a rule, local anesthesia is used for adults and general anesthesia for children.

The method of correction depends on the individual features of the structure of the auricle and the preferences of the surgeon. In case of getting rid of protruding ears, the incision is made on the back wall of the auricle and is not noticeable. The cartilage is dissected, and its excesses are excised, a new shape of the auricle is formed.

The surgeon determines the new shape and location of the cartilage in advance, taking into account the anthropometric data of the patient. The patient is subjected to local or general anesthesia, after which an incision is made behind the fold of the auricle. The cartilage is shaped to fit the ear close to the head. Sometimes, together with otoplasty, an earlobe plastic surgery is performed.

This operation takes about half an hour – hours, and is tolerated by patients quite easily. To maintain the new position of the cartilage, special rollers are applied to the ears, and on top – a fixation bandage or bandage to be worn for one month.

Classic otoplasty using a surgical scalpel can be replaced by laser otoplasty. The use of a laser scalpel makes it possible to model the ear cartilage without leaving any traces of the operation.

Rehabilitation period after otoplasty

The rehabilitation period lasts approximately 2-3 weeks. So, during the first two days you can observe swelling in the area of surgical intervention. In addition, every two to three days it is necessary to change the dressings at the site of correction. This procedure must be carried out within two weeks.

In addition, it is worth noting that the sutures used in otoplasty do not dissolve on their own. Therefore, approximately 8-10 days after the operation, the surgeon will need to remove them. Since the stitching points are hidden behind the ears, they will not be visible to others.

The editors of Estet-portal wish you to always be healthy and look great. But I would like to remind you that plastic surgery – this is a major surgical intervention and should only be performed by an experienced, qualified physician.
