Причины кариеса — как защитить зубы

Dental caries — destructive dental process. This is the most common disease worldwide. The causes of caries lie in the formation of a sticky plaque on the teeth, which contains a certain type of bacteria.

Many types of bacteria live in the human mouth. They are contained in  saliva and  pieces of food, forming the so-called plaques. Bacteria convert the sugar and carbohydrates we eat into acid. It destroys the hard layer of enamel, reaches the dentin and forms a cavity. Plaque is located between teeth, near the gum line, around fillings or bridges, in small cracks and pits. The result of caries — broken tooth. Damaged teeth can only be treated medically by a dentist, but you can prevent the appearance of a cavity by adhering to some rules.

Definition of caries: symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis

Early caries does not have any symptoms. Later, when the tooth enamel is destroyed, it becomes sensitive to hot and cold, sweet and sour.

You can determine caries at home. But only in the sad case when the pathological process has already destroyed the enamel and reached the dentin.

Early diagnosis is carried out only in the polyclinic. The dentist examines the teeth with the help of a special instrument and certain methods. X-rays may show the beginning of decay between the teeth. Liquid dye, which is applied to  enamel and then washed off, remains in  microcracks invisible to the eye. The laser detects caries in the initial stage and virtually cures it.

If caries is diagnosed early, it can be cured without a dental drill. Acid-damaged enamel will naturally regenerate if the damaging effects of the acid stop.

If the enamel is destroyed, the tooth decays down to the root. The process can take from several months to several years. The sooner you turn to stomatology, the more chances to save the tooth.

What is the danger of caries if it is not treated

Untimely contact with a doctor can provoke:

  • flux — inflammation of the periosteum;

  • cyst

    — granuloma formation in bone tissue;

  • pulpitis

     — inflammation of the soft tissues of the tooth;

    periodontitis
  •  — infectious inflammation of the connective tissue (periodontium) up to abscess.

Can Is it possible to eliminate the causes of caries yourself Tooth damage can be prevented by oral hygiene.

For the purpose of prevention it is necessary:

Perform regular dental checkups.

The doctor will detect white plaque, gum problems, minor chips and cracks.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. Use fluoride toothpaste. It strengthens the teeth inside and out, protects them from destruction.

  • Rinse your teeth after meals with dental elixir. This is especially important after eating sweet foods. Some foods high in sugar and starch increase the supply of acid, which destroys the hard tissues of the tooth.

  • Remove food debris between teeth. Use dental floss or toothpicks.

  • Control your diet. Reducing enamel and tooth decay depends on a well-balanced diet. Eat foods high in sugar and starch as little as possible. Add greens, fruits and vegetables to your diet. They contain calcium and reduce acid in saliva.

  • Drink more water.

    Dry mouth keeps cavities on teeth.

  • Reduce coffee and alcohols.

    They cause dry mouth and prevent rinsing naturally.
