From childhood, we are instilled with the habit of eating our problems and difficulties. And the negative passes, hides for a while, and then rolls with renewed vigor, and we seize again, and so on in a circle. The problem does not go away, it is not solved. Anxiety can be based on internal uncertainty, and loneliness, and fears, and resentment, and unexpressed anger, and dissatisfaction with relationships with significant others, etc. And we just do not know how to withstand mental stress, how to deal with it in a different way, without seizing.

Food can also solve other problems. For example, when we are constantly used, but we cannot say "no", and at the same time we do not want to do what is asked.
