World Day of the Sick — This is an international day designed to draw people's attention to the problems that sick people face around the planet. This day — a kind of social event, which is held around the world every year on February 11.
"World Day of the Sick" began to be celebrated relatively recently — in 1993. It was established on the initiative of Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1992. In his message to Catholic Christians, he unequivocally described the purpose of this World Day: "& hellip; to make the employees of numerous Catholic medical organizations, believers, and the entire civil society feel the need to provide better care for the sick and infirm, to alleviate their suffering." John knew about all this firsthand; in 1991, doctors diagnosed him with a terrible diagnosis — Parkinson's disease.
The date for this world day was not chosen by chance. It is believed that on this day, February 11, in the city of Lourdes (France), the apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes took place. This Holy Virgin (Our Lady of Lourdes) became a symbol of the savior of sick people, because during her other appearance, several centuries ago, according to legend, she healed many sick people in the city of Lourdes.
On this day, all sorts of actions and events dedicated to this date are held: concerts, thematic film screenings, educational talks, etc. Catholics hold solemn masses in Latin with the teaching of the Sacrament of Unction.
