Singapore scientists have monitored nearly 3,000 people with hypertension over the years. One of the criteria for examination was the condition of the retina. She was photographed to determine the degree of hypertensive retinopathy (changes in the retina of the eye during a long course of arterial hypertension).
The results of the examination showed:
- over the course of the study, 145 patients had an ischemic stroke, and 17 – hemorrhagic.
- People with mild retinopathy had a 38% increased risk of stroke and a 96% increase in blood clots even with continued use of blood pressure medication.
- In patients with moderate to severe retinopathy, the risk of having a stroke was increased by 40%, and the likelihood of a blood clot – 98%.
From this observation, we can conclude that the retina shows the state of the vessels of the brain. Therefore, cardiologists advise every hypertensive patient to assess the condition of the retina. Such an inexpensive and uncomplicated study will help you maintain your health.
