Due to the fact that we regularly face all kinds of difficulties and puzzle over the solution of complex problems, from time to time our nervous system does not stand up. In order to regulate your emotional state, you need to try to relax, take a break from the accumulated mountain of affairs for a couple of days and resort to the help of sedatives. What sedatives exist, which ones will be more effective and less harmful, Estet-portal will tell you.

There are two large groups of sedatives: synthetic and herbal. In addition, there are preparations for the manufacture of which use the basis of plant raw materials of synthetic components.

What types of sedatives are there

  • sedatives. These are classic sedatives that are made on a plant basis, or they are based on bromine. These drugs rarely cause side effects, unlike other types of sedatives;
  • tranquilizers (anxiolytics). Psychotropic drugs that are used to suppress anxiety, reduce emotional stress, get rid of fears and other mental disorders. The basis of most modern tranquilizers – benzodiazepines;
  • Neuroleptics. Pretty strong drugs with a powerful sedative effect. Such drugs are used in psychiatric practice;
  • normothymic drugs. Psychotropic drugs used to stabilize the mood of people with a mental illness.
    The most harmless sedatives for the body are sedatives.

Among sedatives motherwort infusions, valerian, combined herbal preparations are used. Compared to sedatives used in psychiatry, sedatives have a less pronounced effect.

The sedatives that are most in demand are those based on valerian. The rhizomes of this plant have long been used as a sedative and hypnotic drug. Such drugs are produced both in liquid form (tinctures) and in tablets. In addition to valerian, lemon balm, motherwort and others are also used for such preparations.

Benefits: have a mild effect on the body, minimizing the possibility of side effects. The use of a sedative drug on a natural basis virtually eliminates the development of adverse reactions and, as a rule, are reversible. Promotes fast falling asleep and deep sleep.

Disadvantages: Dizziness, fatigue and drowsiness may occur very rarely. In case of hypersensitivity to a particular drug, allergic reactions may occur.

Indications for use: neurasthenia, hysteria, sense of unreasonable anxiety, mild form of neurosis, increased irritability, insomnia.

Bromides are also used as sedatives for the treatment of neurosis, hysteria and neurasthenia – salts of hydrobromic acid. Compared to herbal preparations, the sedative effect of bromides is more pronounced and can only be used as prescribed by a doctor. If bromides are taken systematically, bromine poisoning can occur due to the fact that such a substance is rather slowly excreted from the body.

The use of sedatives will only be effective in a course of treatment.
