Shank Prakshalana – a very effective way of cleansing the body, which is available to any person. This practice is also called the "shell gesture"; and it is a complete bowel cleansing with salt water. Unlike cleansing through an enema, Shank Prakshalana will help cleanse not only the large intestine, but also the small intestine.

Drinking salted water alternates with performing special exercises until the water leaves the body absolutely clear. It is better to perform such a procedure on an empty stomach, its duration is from 1 to 1.5 hours.

Preparation for cleansing the body Shank Prakshalana

Salted water should be prepared. To do this, prepare from 10 to 14 glasses of boiled water, the temperature of which should correspond to the temperature of your body. As for proportions, 1 teaspoon of salt is required per liter of water.

Before proceeding with this procedure, you must first clean with an enema or  take a mild laxative at night.

Shank Prakshalana: procedure flow chart

1. A glass of warm water is drunk.

2. Special exercises are performed that can force water to move into the intestines.

3. After that, a glass of water is drunk again and a series of exercises is repeated. Continue alternating between drinking and exercising until you have finished 6 glasses of water. If after drinking so much water, the cleansing process did not start, repeat the exercises without drinking. After the first bowel movement occurs, the lavage will proceed without problems.

4. After the first evacuation takes place, a glass of water is drunk again and a series of exercises is performed.

5. Next, drinking water alternates with doing exercises until the water comes out completely clear.

To achieve emptying of the stomach and turn off the siphon after Shank Prakshalana, yogis resort to inducing vomiting (Vamana-Dhauti). To do this, drink 3 glasses of pure water (unsalted) and induce vomiting.

Shank Prakshalana exercises for cleansing the body

Mountain Pose

You need to stand up straight, and spread your legs so that the distance between them is approximately 10-15 cm. The knees should be tense, and the kneecaps should be pulled up. Push the hip joint forward and up, while contracting the gluteal muscles and pulling the stomach. Do not bulge the pelvis forward, while pulling the back muscles of the thighs. Push your chest forward, stretch your spine up. The neck is straight, the muscles of the face and neck are relaxed. Evenly distribute body weight along the entire length of the feet.

Raise your straight arms above your head, palms forward, fingers interlaced. Rise on your toes, imagine that you are being pulled up by your hands, feel the stretching of the spine from the coccyx to the top of the head. Rise on your toes while inhaling, when standing on your fingertips, hold your breath, and when lowering, exhale.

Pose of a tree bending under the pressure of the wind

Standing in Tadasana (Mountain Pose), lean to the side, first to the right, then – to the left. It is important that the heels, shoulders, ears, hips and palms are in the same plane. It is necessary to repeat 12 tilts in each direction.

Waist rotation

Stand straight with your feet shoulder-width apart, stretch your right arm horizontally forward, and bend your left arm so that your thumb and forefinger touch your collarbone. Body turns should be carried out so that the outstretched arm is retracted as far back as possible. The body is free, keep the back straight, the chin is raised, the gaze is fixed on the fingers of the palm receding back.

The lower part of the body must remain motionless, the turns are carried out only around the waist. You need to repeat the turns 12 times to the left and to the right.

Turning Cobra Pose

 Lie on the floor, resting on it with your palms and socks, your hips should be raised. Feet should be spread apart. Without stopping, return to the starting position and turn to the other side. In total, 12 turns should be performed for each side.

Belly massage

You need to squat down with your feet slightly apart. The heels touch the outside of the thighs, the feet are slightly apart, the palms are on the knees. Turning the torso, tilt the left knee down, keep the right knee vertical, return to the starting position. Do the same – tilt your right knee to the floor, turn your torso to the left. You should look behind you - this will increase the twisting of the body and pressure on the stomach. Repeat 12 twists for each side.

Eating and drinking after the Shank Prakshalana exercise

After the procedure, it is recommended to lie down for 30 minutes or an hour, and after this time, eat the first meal – boiled rice, no salt. You can also eat oatmeal, wheat or other porridge.

Important! Within 24 hours after exercise, it is not recommended to consume yeast bread, milk and kefir. You can only eat cereals on the water, stewed and boiled vegetables. Raw fruits and vegetables are allowed the next day.

 Immediately after doing the exercises to cleanse the body, a feeling of thirst appears, but no liquid should be taken before the first meal. Then you can drink only pure water and herbal infusions.

Such a cleansing of the stomach should not be performed with a stomach ulcer, acute colitis, dysentery, diarrhea.
