Клиповое мышление или Как человек воспринимает информацию

With the development of information technologies and ways of communication between people, the development and perception of this information by a person takes place, with regard to speed, quality, use of imagination and methods of analytics. Scientists in the field of cultural studies have long been saying that a new concept in this area called "clip thinking" has come into being and call it a phenomenon of modernity.

What is the essence of this phenomenon, how do researchers explain it and what are the possible prerequisites for this phenomenon, we have to figure it out and understand.

What are the makings of the phenomenon of "clip thinking"

At the heart of this phenomenon of modernity lies the word and the concept of clip. What does an ordinary person mean by this word – accompaniment of a musical performance, saturated with images for the perception of the context of music. Although today the creation of clips goes beyond understanding the context of a musical composition.

The word "clip" is translated from English as a newspaper clipping, an excerpt from a film, and literally – clipping.

And so it turns out that the music video is a frame that is discontinuous in meaning, which are subjectively linked together and impose their own world of perception. By analogy, one can understand clip thinking – a person perceives the world in a fragmented way, a holistic picture does not form in the mind, there is no ability to connect everything together. Instead, the human brain perceives the world around it as a series of disconnected events and images.

A person of "clip thinking" cannot analyze what is happening, the images do not linger in the mind, but are constantly replaced by new pictures.

Lack of ability to keep one's attention on one subject, which also affects behavior: switching channels a hundred times a minute, switching between multiple tabs in search of the next dose of information and images, wandering through social networks, forums, blogs.

What is "clip thinking" – researchers' explanations

Through the clip, a person perceives the surrounding world – abruptly, without obvious connecting links, which are based on images devoid of a common meaning. Images and pictures are fleetingly replaced by each other, and entail thoughts, preventing one from concentrating and developing one statement, thinking about it, making assumptions and deducing appropriate conclusions. A person completely loses the ability to lend information to analysis and verification.

The phenomenon of "clip thinking" through the media has arisen,  as a way of presenting information blocks that are not related to each other. The starting point for understanding this phenomenon is the period of the 90s of the twentieth century. Thus, not the World Wide Web, but the media contributed to the emergence of the phenomenon. When perceiving information in the media, the human brain gets confused when comprehending "clips" – scraps, pictures, abstracts – and connects not by actual similarity, and temporary.

The reason for the emergence of clip thinking is the immense flow of information that they want to convey to us, and human curiosity. That is, the desire to learn more and faster with minimal time.

For a long time abroad, people have been operating with the concept of "clip culture", which is a broader designation of the phenomenon. Futurologist E. Toffler writes about such a culture, describing this concept in his work The Third Wave. The futurist claims that "clip culture" is part of the new information culture of society. Such a culture is designed for people with a certain fragmented mindset, and is based on changing the information feed at a fast pace, without staying long in one field.

Also, in addition to clip thinking and culture, there is such a thing as "zepping" – from English. – the practice of switching TV channels. "Zapping" means  the formation in the mind of a person of a fragmentary general image, which consists of incoherent details and impressions, emotions received while watching a network of news reviews or advertising.

In the development of domestic science, philosopher Fyodor Girenyuk pays attention to the phenomenon of "clip thinking". He says that in philosophy there has been a breakthrough in the perception of the world, which he calls "thinking that reacts only to a blow." This means that when changing pictures, our consciousness perceives and processes information with the help of a shock wave of images.

Possible Prerequisites for Clip Thinking

C.G. Frumkin identified in 2010 5 prerequisites that contribute to the emergence of the phenomenon:

  1. increasing need to update the relevance of information and perceive faster;
  2. The pace of life is accelerating, and the volume of information flow is growing exponentially – which makes it difficult to select information and filter the main thing;
  3. the information that comes in is varied, which increases the difficulty of perception;
  4. the growth of a person's employment per minute has increased: in addition to the usual duties at work, it is necessary to constantly monitor all information in order to keep abreast of events;
  5. growth of dialogueness in society.

The phenomenon of "clip thinking" has earned a negative attitude. Today it is said that teenagers and young people have been awarded this type of thinking. This is facilitated by the constant liking in networks, listening to fragmentary music in transport, sitting on forums. Thus, fragmentary, unrelated information enters the brain in batches, making it impossible to focus on one type of information to digest the main idea.
