Many people are very frightened by the sound and even the very sight of the drill, which they are used to seeing in the dentist's office. Therefore, specialists are constantly busy developing new and improved methods of dental treatment without the use of this dental device. One of these methods is non-contact ozone dentistry. Today Estet-portal will tell you what is the essence of such non-contact treatment of caries with ozone (ozone therapy), what are its advantages, as well as disadvantages for dentists and patients.

Caries treatment with ozone involves disinfection with the help of triatomic oxygen molecules, and not mechanical removal of tissues affected by caries. Ozone molecules are 99.99% capable of removing all cariogenic microorganisms in the carious cavity.

The procedure for treating caries with ozone takes place in 3 stages:

  1. A special silicone cap is applied to the tooth, connected to the tip of the ozone therapy device.
  2. Air is sucked out from under this cap, creating something close to a vacuum.
  3. Ozone is fed into the cap to influence the microflora. All cariogenic microorganisms die within 20-30 seconds.

The main advantage of caries treatment with ozone therapy is the possibility of dental treatment without the use of a drill (only for small carious defects). In other cases, the tooth will still need to be drilled and possibly anesthetized.

Disadvantages of dental treatment with ozone therapy

  • the need to drill the tooth in 99% of cases, otherwise there is a possibility that a large amount of relatively softened tissue will remain inside and outside that cannot bear the full load;
  • The use of ozone therapy devices is advisable only in children's clinics, when it is not possible to use a drill. In this case, the softened enamel and dentin are first scraped out with curettage spoons, and then the remaining tooth tissues are disinfected with ozone. After that, a seal is installed.

Estet-portal hopes that in the future, dentists will be able to provide patients with even more ways to treat their teeth without using a drill.
