Complications that a patient may experience after aesthetic procedures, – this is one of the most important topics discussed today by specialists in the cosmetology industry. The fact that complications happen, and quite often, and very difficult – has not been a secret for a long time either for doctors or for the patients themselves. But how to get out of such situations so that the patient remains healthy and satisfied, there may be different options.
The editors of estet-portal.com talked with Evgeny Shagov, candidate of medical sciences, dermatovenereologist, chief physician of SHAGOV AESTHETIC MEDICINE.
Why complications after the procedures are more frequent
Modern aesthetic medicine is undergoing a very dynamic development. Every year more and more new innovative technologies for rejuvenation and appearance correction become available to us.

The peculiarity of aesthetic medicine today is a concentrated time demand: the demand for new technologies is hypertrophied, and unfortunately, there is no time for their proper implementation (assessment of the safety and effectiveness of new drugs and technologies). That is why we, specialists in the field of aesthetic medicine, are doomed to the appearance of complications. And as the complexity of technologies and methods increases, the consequences of complications become more and more dramatic.
What are the most common complications after procedures
In aesthetic medicine periodicals and electronic publications, materials showing the results of successful procedures are most often presented. Unfortunately, in our country, statistics are not properly kept on cases when aesthetic procedures had sad consequences for the patient. But the Americans the year before last collected and published some data on complications. Thus, the ASAPS statistics, 2013 (Highlights of the ASAPS 2013 Statistics on Cosmetic Surgery) showed:
Complications after botulinum toxin injections:
• more than 3.7 million procedures were performed in the US in 2013;
• botulinum toxin injections account for almost 40% of all procedures in the field of aesthetic medicine.
Complications after injections of hyaluronic acid, including after contouring:
• more than 1.9 million procedures performed in the US in 2013;
• hyaluronic acid injections account for almost 20% of all procedures in the field of aesthetic medicine.
Vascular complications: the main fear of aesthetic medicine specialists
Complications after microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, fractional laser resurfacing:
• more than 0.9 million procedures were performed in the USA in 2013;
• microdermabrasion accounts for 10% of all aesthetic medicine procedures.
Complications after laser hair removal:
• more than 0.9 million procedures were performed in the USA in 2013;
• laser and photoepilation accounts for almost 10% of all procedures in the field of aesthetic medicine.
Complications after photorejuvenation:
• in the United States, almost 0.5 million procedures were performed in 2013;
• photorejuvenation accounts for up to 5% of all procedures in the field of aesthetic medicine.
Any of our doctors are at risk of developing such complications after aesthetic procedures. All this puts us in a situation in which the patient / sole practitioner / clinic is extremely vulnerable. And only together, uniting, we can effectively deal with these risks.
What to do if there are complications
Most often, when a complication occurs in a patient after an aesthetic procedure, the doctor is alone with this complex problem. This is very sad, because, in addition to the inevitable remorse and attempts to analyze ways in which such a complication could have been avoided, the doctor spends great efforts to understand the causes of what happened and find ways to correct it.
Unfortunately, the moral loss of a doctor in the event of complications in his patient – this is not the worst of the consequences. Even if it was possible to minimize the troubles and correct the appearance after the complication, the doctor can expect:
- the risk of losing a regular customer, and this is a significant financial loss;
- loss of reputation: as you know, "one happy customer brings 7, and dissatisfied – takes away 15";
- a patient's statement of claim, a lawsuit with all the ensuing consequences (a fine, loss of a license, the right to engage in core activities, or even the opening of criminal proceedings).
Is it possible to avoid such a development of events
Cosmetological mainstream of complications puts us before the task of qualitatively solving a number of issues:
- increasing the awareness of patients about the likely development of complications, assisting them in the correct approach to planning the upcoming aesthetic correction procedure;
- assisting practitioners to improve their skills;
- effective, timely advisory and, if necessary, practical assistance to specialists in the event of various complications, as well as in determining the optimal treatment tactics in complex clinical cases.
What are the practical benefits of a collaborative approach to solving problems of complications after aesthetic procedures
It is very important for a practitioner to have the following options in case of complications in a patient:
- Ask a competent specialist at any time of the day and get a qualified answer with recommendations on treatment tactics;
- if necessary – possibility of referral to the nearest expert clinic;
- get support in communicating with a patient who has experienced a complication, referring to the opinion of world-renowned experts;
- improve one's own qualifications by working out complications that have arisen earlier in the practice of other specialists and analyzing the reasons that led to them;
- if necessary – get legal support from experienced professionals in the field.
What needs to be done to put into practice such a valuable approach to the problem of complications?
