The SARS-CoV-2 virus has been studied in detail since its inception. Dermatological manifestations of coronavirus infectionii were not detected in the early stages of the appearance of the virus and are still not included in the list of typical symptoms of the course of the disease. According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, Spanish dermatologists have identified and described 5 common skin manifestations of coronavirus. Let's consider at estet-portal.com, how can you show the virus on the skin and how this clinical picture differs from other pathologies.

Results of the study of dermatological symptoms of coronavirus
Spanish dermatologists conducted a nationwide study on the manifestation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on the skin, using the definitions of the European Center for Disease Control.
The study included all patients who had a body rash of unknown etiology in the past two weeks, as well as an already confirmed diagnosis of Covid-19.

During the study, it was possible to identify and describe 5 common clinical manifestations coronavirus infection:
- Pseudo-frostbite – 19% of cases.
- Vesicular elements – 9% of cases.
- Urticarial elements – 19% of cases.
- Maculopapular eruptions – 47% of cases.
- Livedo or necrosis – 6%.
Clinical characteristics of skin manifestations of Covid-19
Pseudofrostbite is asymmetric patches of erythema and edema with a few vesicles and pustules on the arms and legs, as well as patches of skin with a purplish rash. Such skin lesions may resemble the clinical picture of frostbite.
Pseudo-frostbite mainly occurred in young patients, could occur during the course of the disease. They can cause pain (32% of cases) and itching (30% of cases).
Such skin manifestations of coronavirus have been associated with less severe Covid-19 in terms of hospitalization rates, pneumonia and respiratory failure, resuscitation, and death.
According to the results of the study, vesicular elements in patients with coronavirus infection were located on the trunk, limbs and were monomorphic vesicles of small diameter, in contrast to vesicular rashes in chicken pox. They could also have hemorrhagic contents, increase in size and be more diffuse. Skin lesions of this type occurred among middle-aged people, appeared earlier than other symptoms, and were associated with moderate severity of Covid-19. In the course of the study, it was found that in 68% of cases, vesicular rashes were accompanied by itching.

Urticarial elements were mostly located on the trunk or scattered. The study also identified several cases where urticarial elements were found on the palm.

Maculopapular rashes were located on the periphery of the hair follicles and had different diameters. Some of these were described during the study as being similar to Pityriasis rosea (Pityriasis rosea). Also among them there could be a purple rash: dotted or on large areas of the skin. In a few cases, infiltrated papules were found on the extremities, mainly on the back of the hands, which looked pseudovesicular or resembled erythema multiforme.

Urticarial and maculopapular lesions have a similar pattern of outcomes. Such skin lesions appeared at the same time as typical symptoms and were associated with a severe course of the disease. In most cases, urticarial and maculopapular rashes on the skin were accompanied by itching.

The presence of dermatological symptoms in patients, such as livedo or necrosis of varying degrees, indicates occlusive vascular pathology and ischemia, including affected areas on both the trunk and extremities.
This clinical picture was observed in older people and was associated with a more severe course of the disease (10% mortality).
Thus, 5 common dermatological manifestations of coronavirus have been identified and described. The detected clinical symptoms are not specific and may be the result of both Covid-19 and comorbidities. However, given the high mortality rate and severe course of the disease, timely and accurate identification of skin manifestations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus can play a key role in early diagnosis and treatment.
