Otoplasty is one of the most popular surgical operations, since it is not always possible to hide a deformed or unaesthetic auricle with a haircut. But even if this is possible, the patient continues to feel discomfort from his external lack. If we are talking about a child, then an unaesthetic auricle can cause his low self-esteem and mental disorders. Experts recommend not postponing ear correction, whether it is a child or an adult, as confidence in one's appearance significantly affects the quality of life, and modern otoplasty methods can solve this problem quickly and effectively.
Choosing auricle correction method
Auricle correction may be aesthetic or reconstructive. In the first case – we are talking about a change in the aesthetic form, for example, if there is congenital protruding ears. In the second case, the surgeon faces a more difficult task: to recreate the auricle, which is completely or partially missing (which happens as a result of injuries, certain diseases or congenital defects in appearance).
For protruding ears, otoplasty is recommended from the age of 6. Further, the children begin an active period of school socialization, and care should be taken in advance that the baby does not form complexes about appearance. In addition, after the elimination of protruding ears, the child's ears develop in perfect harmony, in accordance with the process of his growth. If the patient is afraid of the consequences of surgery, then he should be reminded that otoplasty does not leave a noticeable mark, since usually highly cosmetic incisions are made along the back of the auricle.
Today, there are many methods for correcting the auricles. They allow, by modeling cartilage tissue, to create a natural and aesthetic shape of the ears. The choice of correction technique is carried out by the surgeon and depends on the state of the anatomical structures of the patient's auricles and on the degree of their deformation. The following techniques are most commonly used in otoplasty:
- cartilaginous – with surgical modeling of cartilage to give it the desired shape, when, if necessary, a certain cartilage fragment is removed, and due to this, the auricle becomes less deep;
- suture – with the formation of the auricle due to the imposition of special sutures. This method is also called the Mustardi technique, it is less traumatic than surgical modeling. In this case, the cartilage is not resected, and otoplasty is performed using an incision on the back of the ear and U-shaped silk sutures placed on the cartilage. Next, the incision is sutured, and the new shape of the auricle is supported by a special modeling bandage until complete healing.
Specialists of the Medical Club Clinic choose for each patient with a problematic ear shape an individual correction program and the otoplasty technique that will be most effective in his particular case.
How is the surgical correction of the auricle
For those who have decided to correct the shape of the auricle and have chosen surgeons from the Medical Club for this, the clinic will provide a detailed consultation on the operation, and make the necessary examinations. Based on laboratory data and other information that the surgeon deems necessary to collect in order to make a decision, the patient will be described in detail by what method it is possible to correct the shape of the ears in his case, what the final result of the operation will look like. You will be able to get answers from the doctor to any questions about how otoplasty will take place, whether it is safe enough and what risks of the operation may arise, when it is possible to evaluate the final result.
Otoplasty surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, its duration depends on the extent of the intervention, but usually does not exceed two hours. Immediately after the correction, an elastic compression bandage is applied to the operated auricles, which the patient must wear for about five days, and then put on a special compression bandage at night for another week.
The patient stays in the clinic for no more than a day after otoplasty, and can return to normal life within a few days after the operation. Restrictions on visiting the sauna and solarium, active sports activities must be observed within a month. The final result of the correction of the shape of the ears can be assessed after 3-4 months after the otoplasty.
