Massage rollers are commonly used for beauty treatments, but their effect on skin blood flow (SkBF) and vascular reactivity remains unclear. The researchers hypothesized that short-term use of the massage roller increases SkBF, while prolonged massage improves vasodilation.
Professor Naoyuki Hayashi from the Institute of Humanities at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and colleagues from the Tokyo University of Health and Research and Development Center conducted short-term and long-term experiments with healthy male and female volunteers to study the effect of applying a massage roller on the skin face and blood flow.
In the article estet-portal.com you can read the results of the study in detail.
Short and long term massage roller research
The researchers measured the change in SkBF on the face after a massage roller was used for 5 minutes on the right cheek in 12 patients.
In a long-term experiment, researchers examined the effect of daily massage on the right cheek over a 5-week period on the SkBF aspect of the right cheek. They also examined the reactivity of the facial blood vessels after application of a thermal stimulus in 14 patients, involving the application of a 40°C heating probe, to check if there was any change in the vasodilation response.

Benefits of a Public Facial Massage Roller
In a short-term experiment, even a five-minute massage can significantly increase facial skin blood flow in the massaged cheek, with a relative change of up to about 25%.
Massaging the face with a roller can increase blood flow to the skin for more than ten minutes after the massage.
Imaging using laser-speckle flowgraphy showed red colors indicating higher skin blood flow in the area being massaged.
The results of a long-term study have shown that the use of a roller improves the blood flow response or the so-called vasodilator response to thermal stimulation.
One explanation for this could be that the endothelial cells in the area being massaged produce more nitric oxide, which is known to be a powerful vasodilator.
According to the results, short-term massage significantly increased the SkBF of the face only in the right cheek for at least 10 minutes after the massage. The 5-week intervention significantly increased the vasodilation response to thermal stimulation in the right cheek only.
These data suggest that short-term facial massage with a massage roller increases SkBF, and long-term use improves the vasodilation response.
