Bags under the eyes are a cause for concern for many people, regardless of age. Sometimes this is a reason to see a doctor and find out if swelling under the eyes has occurred due to an exacerbation of internal diseases. It happens that bags under the eyes are the result of an unhealthy lifestyle and may even occur due to hereditary predisposition.

But sometimes bags under the eyes are due to hernial protrusion of adipose tissue, and these hernias reduce visual acuity, cause problems with the lacrimal glands and provoke inflammation of the skin of the eyelids. In this case, surgical correction of bags under the eyes is necessary.

Why and who gets bags under the eyes

The essence of the appearance of bags under the eyes is the protrusion of fatty tissue under the lower eyelid. It can stick out for two reasons – swelling or its excessive growth.  Edema under the eyes appears, as a rule, due to fluid retention, when the blood and lymphatic vessels in the periorbital region cannot cope with the load. This can happen for the following reasons:

  • certain internal diseases (renal failure, conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis);
  • hormonal fluctuations in certain phases of the cycle in women;
  • allergic reaction to cosmetics;
  • smoking;
  • lack of sleep, stress, overwork;
  • excessive sun exposure;
  • drinking liquid or alcohol at night;
  • strain of the eyes while reading, writing, working at the computer.

The reason why bags under the eyes become visible may be a hereditary predisposition to the growth of adipose tissue in this place, or constitutional features that determine the shape of the eyelids  – swelling under the eyes is characteristic of obese people.

Bags under the eyes may be the result of loss of elasticity of the connective tissue membrane – the orbital septum, which separates the periorbital fat from the skin. This can happen due to age or for other individual reasons for each person. Then the membrane stretches and sags, the adipose tissue grows and protrudes like a hernial sac.

Sometimes, these periorbital fat herniations can be small and located  in the inner corners of the eyes. They are unpleasant because they put pressure on the lacrimal glands, lead to a decrease in the clarity of vision of objects, tearing, due to which the skin of the lower eyelid is constantly wet and inflamed. Such bags under the eyes need first of all  surgical correction.

Methods by which you can get rid of bags under the eyes

If these are puffiness under the eyes associated with fluid retention (such bags under the eyes are especially visible in the morning after sleep and disappear during the day), they can be reduced by lifestyle and dietary changes, cosmetics. When it comes to hernial growths, only lower blepharoplasty will help.

If the hernial deformity is small, a transconjunctival method is used, leaving no stitches on the eyelids. With significantly pronounced bags under the eyes, they are removed through an incision along the edge of the lower eyelid, and excess skin is additionally excised. Another way to correct the appearance of bags under the eyes – through intraoral access, which allows not to excise the skin & nbsp; and fat, but to redistribute periorbital fiber throughout the area of the lower edge of the eye orbit.

The effect after the operation is quite persistent, but the patient should be warned that over time the skin of the face ages, and over time, folds may form in the periorbital region. Therefore, after lower blepharoplasty, a special cosmetic skin care program for the periorbital area is recommended.
