Intimate zone condition – an important aspect that determines the quality of the sexual life of any woman. However, various factors (age, childbirth, pathological processes, etc.) can lead to changes that cause both psychological and physical discomfort. Experts in the field of aesthetic gynecology help patients get rid of a number of delicate problems. Dr. Matt Stefanelli spoke about modern methods of surgical and minimally invasive correction of the intimate zone, their capabilities and effectiveness in an interview for estet-portal.com.

What factors affect the condition of the female genital organs?

Many factors affect the condition of the female genital organs – childbirth, aging, cancerous and precancerous conditions, menopause. As for the anatomical aspects of the intimate zone – perineum, vulva, vagina – they are primarily affected by childbirth. Scars after episiotomy, perineal lacerations, hematomas, vaginal relaxation, lengthening of the labia minora – possible consequences of childbirth.

Second factor – aging. As we age, the vagina tends to relax, the labia minora – to elongation, labia majora – to thinning, and the mucous membrane – to atrophy, sensitivity and slight bleeding. Such changes, of course, worsen the quality of life of patients, leading to dyspareunia and even apareunia.

Third factor – these are oncological diseases of the genital organs, including precancerous conditions associated, for example, with papillomavirus, or cancer (squamous cell carcinoma), subject to surgical treatment. After the removal of tumors, scars may also remain, which affect the anatomy of the female genital organs.

Childbirth, aging and cancer – three main factors affecting the state of the intimate zone in women.

What are the most popular methods of aesthetic correction of the intimate area?

One of the most popular procedures aimed at correcting the intimate area, – reduction of the labia minora, because with age, as well as after childbirth, this anatomical structure can lengthen.

This is the first indication for aesthetic correction, which also allows you to get rid of discomfort during intercourse, exercise, walking or other vigorous activities. This procedure is performed only in one way – surgical (excision).

With regard to non-surgical methods of correction, with their help, the doctor can eliminate vaginal dryness, as well as compensate for the loss of volume of the labia majora. For this, minimally invasive techniques are used – injections of fillers (based on HA), PRP or autologous fat.

In what cases is threadlifting of the intimate area performed?

Threadlifting is used relatively rarely to correct the intimate area. This procedure is carried out mainly on the face, sometimes – on the arms or in the abdomen. As for the intimate area, some doctors use threads to lift the labia majora, improve the elasticity of the vagina.

Perhaps in 5-10 years the popularity of threadlifting in aesthetic gynecology will increase, but now this technique is used by few specialists.

Tell us about the features of using PRP to correct the intimate area.

Indications for the introduction of PRP into the vulvovaginal region are due to the effectiveness of this method in eliminating many problems – sexual dysfunction, urinary incontinence, vaginal relaxation, pain, menopausal changes, lichen sclerosus, and more. others

For example, for sexual dysfunction, the introduction of PRP is possible:

  • directly to the clitoris;
  • along the urethra (to stimulate Skene's glands);
  • to point G.

For urinary incontinence, PRP can be used to stimulate the external urethral sphincter. In cases of vaginal dryness, platelet-rich plasma is often used in combination with fillers. PRP generally goes well with other correction methods – HA fillers, lipofilling, laser or radio frequency treatment.

In case of painful scars , PRP injections are also effective due to the growth factors that significantly relieve the pain.

There are many indications for PRP therapy, and this method is excellent for correcting the vulvovaginal area.

PRP injections are perfectly combined with other methods of correction – HA fillers, lipofilling, laser or radio frequency treatment.

What do you think about the use of fillers in aesthetic gynecology?

The use of fillers, primarily – based on HA is becoming increasingly popular in aesthetic gynecology. Indications for the correction of the intimate area with fillers are:

  • loss of volume of the labia majora;
  • vaginal dryness;
  • scarring.

HA-based fillers can be used to address all of the above problems alone or in combination with platelet-rich plasma – these two methods complement and reinforce each other.

In what cases is lipofilling of the intimate zone resorted to?

Lipofilling is used to correct various areas of the face and body, including the intimate area. So, if the patient wants to get more pronounced results, it makes sense to opt for surgical procedures, one of which is lipofilling.

This procedure involves taking no more than 100 cm3 of fat, for example, from the abdomen or thighs. After centrifugation, the volume of the material is reduced to 50-60 cm3. Fat is injected into the labia majora, into the perineum (in the presence of a scar), into the vaginal wall (with its relaxation). PRP is often used in combination with lipofilling to reduce the resorption of adipose tissue - it all depends on the wishes of the patient and the severity of the problem.

What are the most common complications in aesthetic gynecology?

Complications after plastic surgery of the labia minora are in the first place – the most requested surgical procedure. These include the removal of an excess amount of tissue, as a result of which the patient has practically no small labia. This significantly worsens the psychological state of the patient. Among the consequences of an incorrectly carried out correction – painful scarring, as well as dyspareunia and even apareunia, arising from psychological reasons.

Hematomas and infections are also fairly common complications after any surgical procedure. In some cases, a few days after the excision, the wound opens, resulting in a slight deformation of the tissues that requires additional correction.
