10 признаков того, что вам нужен врач-ортодонт

Orthodontics — one of sections of dentistry that deals with malocclusion and dentition defects. Crooked teeth, malocclusion — all this is in competence of this dental direction.

It is no wonder that orthodontics is in demand today more than ever: a smooth, beautiful smile has become a key factor in determining the attractiveness and even the social status of a person. But do we always know that we need an orthodontist? Many will be surprised, but malocclusion has much more signs than the "advanced" forward lower jaw or crooked teeth.

4 direct signs that you need an orthodontist

Some manifestations of malocclusion or curvature of the dentition are noticeable even to a non-specialist:

  • Mandible too protruding or, conversely, "pushed" back. This indicates an incorrect formation of the facial skull — some areas of the bone developed faster, while others slower, which led to such an imbalance.

  • Too deep or not enough occlusion.

Normally, with fully closed jaws, the upper teeth should overlap the lower teeth by about ⅓ of their height. If the upper and lower teeth "become" exactly one on top of the other, or the upper teeth overlap the lower ones by half the height or even completely — so you need to contact an orthodontist.

  • Cross-tooth bite.

This scissor bite can only be seen if it is pronounced. With closed jaws, the upper and lower dentition "close" like scissors: half of the upper teeth slides behind the lower teeth, and the second half extends in front of them.

  • Crowding of teeth.

Teeth that have grown too close together —— a sign that they do not have enough space.  what is the problem — in supernumerary teeth or in underdevelopment of the jaw — the orthodontist must decide.

The listed signs of orthodontic problems can be detected with the naked eye. And the sooner you contact doctor, the less time treatment will take.

But if these signs —— it's too early to calm down. There are also "secret" manifestations of problems with occlusion.

6 indirect signs that you need an orthodontist

In addition to the obvious manifestations of orthodontic problems, there are also indirect signs that you need to be examined by an orthodontist:

  • Multiple caries on one side.

This may indicate that the heavy loads — — this often occurs with malocclusion, which leads to early abrasion of the enamel.

  • "Unexplained" problems with gums.

If, against the background of healthy, in general, teeth and gums, bleeding of the gums from the left or right side, a decrease in their height, pallor and friability or other unpleasant symptoms  — it is also a sign of malocclusion. In this case, problems with the periodontium arise on the contrary, due to insufficient loads on any side of the jaw, as a result of which blood circulation is disturbed in the soft tissues.

  • Frequent headaches.

Anomalies of bite create an uneven or excessive load on the temporomandibular joint. As a result, inflammatory or degenerative processes can develop in it. And localization of the joint in the temporal region explains why the pain in it feels like a headache.

  • You have problems with diction, and they cannot be solved by any speech therapy techniques and methods.

The tongue, just like teeth, is part of the articulatory apparatus. If the teeth are misaligned, the tongue does not have the necessary conditions to ensure a clear pronunciation of sounds.

  • Frequent  stomach problems.

Often, doctors shrug — against the background of a proper diet, the absence of other health problems and a generally healthy lifestyle, a person develops chronic gastritis. In some cases, this may be due to malocclusion — improper closing of teeth leads to insufficient primary processing of food. As a result, constant stress on the stomach leads to inflammation of its mucosa. Such loads are due to the fact that the stomach has to do an additional amount of work on the digestion of poor-quality chewed food.

  • You have pronounced facial asymmetry.

This is often associated with malocclusion and uneven loads on the jaw, which leads to stronger development of the facial muscles on "loaded" side and visible asymmetry.

If any of the symptoms described, visit an orthodontist. If he confirms that malocclusion — the treatment carried out will relatively quickly eliminate unpleasant symptoms and restore your beautiful smile.
