Short-term emotional insights allowed outstanding scientists to make the greatest discoveries that turned the world upside down. However, you don't have to be a genius to have an epiphany.

Insight (from English insight — insight, enlightenment) is a state in which a person suddenly manages to find a solution to a specific problem, or make some kind of discovery. For such a state, the word illumination is also used and its appearance is equated with a miracle. However, there is no magic in this phenomenon, because it can be explained with the help of science. In psychology, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, the concept of insight is quite actively used.

Insight – this is a desirable stage in solving any problem. There are four stages in total:

I stage. At this stage, the person is introduced to the problem. Important information is being collected (which is directly or indirectly related to the issue). Attempts are made to apply the information received to the problem, and known methods of solution are considered.

II stage. The second stage of the process is the so-called incubation period. This stage is the longest on the way to solving the problem and can last for many years. This stage is different in that the person is mentally distracted from the task, and the subconscious, in turn, continues to work on it independently.

While the problem travels through the subconscious, a person can do things that are absolutely not related to it – play video games or read a book. However, over time, returning to the task, comes the realization that the problem has become more understandable.

Stage III. Actually, this stage is insight. There is a change in the incubation period with vivid recognizable experiences. After the accumulation of a critical mass of information, the subconscious is ready to "give out" a solution, which is not new, because all this time it was in the subconscious.

Insight can come at any moment, those things unrelated to the problem that a person was busy with at the stage of incubation, as if everything was cleared up. At the same time, insight usually comes very unexpectedly, at the wrong time and in the wrong place where it should be expected. For example, the periodic table was born in a dream of a great chemist, and not within the walls of the laboratory in which he worked.

IV stage. Verification stage. Implementation of the solution takes place and monitoring of how effective it is.

When a person has an insight, not individual elements of the problem are revealed to him, but the overall picture, the assembled puzzle, becomes clear.

In order to attract the onset of insights, you need to be able to get distracted and let go of thoughts. If you constantly think about the problem and wait for insight, it is unlikely to come to you. You just need to switch your attention. For example, watch movies, read a couple of books, take a walk in a beautiful place. So it is possible to plunge into the search for metaphors, and the better and more diverse the conditions for this search, the more likely it is to find a solution.

Also, an effective way to switch attention is physical activity related to the "meditative" type. A shower or bath can also increase your chance of experiencing insight, as water improves blood circulation and stimulates the scalp.

So, to experience insight, try cycling, relaxing in the bath, or meditating. Perhaps by learning to take your mind off the problem, you will be able to find a solution much faster.
