Marketing strategies force us into a world of purchases that we sometimes make on impulse. But how to interrupt the game and not get into a story called shopaholism? What does he hide and how to determine that the fine line beyond which the rational desire for renewal turns into shopaholism?
Shopaholism (oniomania) – it is a reckless and irresistible desire to buy. This is one of the varieties of psychological addictions, which consists in the impulsive spending of money on unnecessary things in large quantities, as a result of which a feeling of guilt and remorse arises. Of course, we all love to shop. It uplifts the mood, distracts from problems and gives pleasure. But there is a fine line, crossing which we find ourselves in captivity of shops and purchases.
So, a shopaholic often goes shopping aimlessly, buys unnecessary goods, constantly talks about shops and purchases. He seems to lose the ability to think, and as a result, the acquired thing does not bring pleasure, but only anger or guilt. He often hides his new clothes from family members, fearing scandals and accusations. Goes shopping in a bad mood because buying is the only way to pick him up. Spends most of his time and money shopping, skipping other aspects of life.
Shopping Addiction: Captivated by Stores
The reason for shopaholism, like any other addiction, is the inability to be in your life situation, the desire to escape from it, not to deal with it. Workaholics plunge headlong into work, alcoholics look for a way out at the bottom of the bottle, and shopaholics plunge into the wonderful world of shopping. And, indeed, stores can give a sense of power through the helpful and respectful behavior of sellers, bright and beautiful packages. They can also give a sense of freedom: I can afford to buy everything, not just what I need. It also raises self-esteem and self-confidence. Even the feeling of loneliness is not so pronounced in this frenzied shopping race among the large crowd. And what can we say about the feeling of happiness that directly absorbs when buying a new thing, jewelry.
Contrary to popular belief that shopaholism – lot of women, I would like to note that the male part of the population very often suffers from this disease. Like women, they are prone to depression, low self-esteem, loneliness and boredom, and also easily become psychologically addicted to shopping. What to do if you notice this painful craving for shopping? Of course, you need to seek help from a psychologist, with whom you will find and be able to realize the true cause of your illness.
But there are a number of recommendations that may well become the prevention of shopaholism.
Realize that you have a problem, plan your purchases.
Before you go to the store, make a list of what you need and stick to it carefully, without being distracted by the variety of goods.
When going to the store, take a certain amount needed for specific purchases. Thus, the temptation to buy something else is limited.
Avoid sales and discounts. If a product has become cheaper, this does not mean at all that it has become necessary.
The first time you go to the store, accompanied by reputable friends who do not suffer from the affliction of shopaholism.
Find an alternative. If you have a craving to go shopping, use another solution: visit the hairdresser, gym, sauna, cinema, theater, etc.
Be healthy, happy and satisfied with yourself, regardless of the things you have purchased!
