Doctors have long accused deodorants and antiperspirants of causing various diseases. Belgian scientists undertook to prove that, in addition, modern antiperspirants can increase unpleasant odors, contrary to the expected effect.

Researchers from the University of Ghent organized an experiment with the participation of 8 women and men aged 23 to 29 years, in which the quantitative and species composition of the microflora of the armpits was determined in advance. After that, people were asked not to use deodorants and antiperspirants for a month (this is the period necessary for the complete renewal of the epidermis). The control group, in contrast, was asked to use cosmetics daily to eliminate sweat odor.

Scientists have found that the use of antiperspirants in the armpit bacterial ecosystem has undergone significant changes. For example, the subjects recorded an increase in the number of actinobacteria, which are responsible for a specific unpleasant odor. Participants who used deodorants had significantly fewer of these bacteria. Scientists have explained that aluminum zinc salts in modern antiperspirants block the sweat glands. And this, in turn, contributes to the growth of microbes that produce an unpleasant odor and, accordingly, to its strengthening.
