The large shape of the ears refers more to cosmetic deficiencies than to health problems. However, there are quite a lot of patients who ask whether otoplasty will help to achieve a more modest size of this organ. This issue is especially of concern to men, since they most often cannot hide the large shape of their ears under their hair, and therefore experience serious worries about their cosmetic flaw. Ear plasty involves the correction of not only the shape, but also the size of the auricle. And if the large shape of the ears is really inconsistent in size in relation to & nbsp; other parts of the head, this may be an indication for surgery.
When a large ear shape becomes an indication for surgery
The large shape of the ears suggests an increased size of the visible part of the outer ear. As you know, the auricle performs important functions:
- sound pickup – catches, concentrates and transforms sounds thanks to its funnel shape;
- ototopic – determines the direction from which the sound signal will come from;
- protective – protection of the structures of the inner ear from injury, dust, exposure to cold.
In addition, there are many biologically active points on the surface through which acupuncture method can affect certain brain centers due to the system of nerve connections.
All of these features suggest that the larger ears might be more of an advantage, but most people see this as a cosmetic flaw. And if it becomes the cause of isolation, serious psychological disorders, this may be a reason for plastic surgery of the ears.
The large shape of the ears can be combined with protruding ears, deformation of the auricle, asymmetry, disrupt the proportions of the face. The following parameters are considered normal sizes of the auricle:
- for men – length 50-82mm, width 32-52mm;
- for women – length 50-77 mm, width 28-45 mm.
Sometimes the right ear can be slightly larger than the left, or the auricles seem disproportionately large compared to other parts of the head – these shortcomings are not indications for otoplasty.
True macrotia (enlargement of the auricle) can be of several types:
- giant ear – has a regular shape, but is evenly enlarged in all sizes;
- enlargement of individual parts of the ear – edges, lobes or funnels;
- altered earlobe – elongated along, across or in all directions, with increased flabbiness.
Ways to correct large ears
Aesthetic ear surgery is recommended at any age, but not earlier than 15 years old – after the shape of the auricle is finally formed. A computer simulation of the size of the ear is preliminarily carried out. The operation is performed under local anesthesia.
An incision is made behind the auricle, excess skin is excised, the size and shape of the ear cartilage is corrected. With laser otoplasty, the correction is carried out practically without pain, without blood, more accurately and accurately. After the operation, a fixing bandage is recommended for 2 weeks, the sutures are removed after about a week. The patient is advised to avoid sports training and other active exercises that could injure the ears for two months.
