Gneiss is the name given to elements of rashes in the form of dense greasy scales that form during atopic or seborrheic dermatitis. The formation of gneiss indicates the possible development of atopic dermatitis and makes the doctor alert. The main manifestation of gneiss is severe itching of the skin and dense yellowish crusts on it.
In the first year of life, many children have signs of atopic dermatitis in the form of manifestations of gneiss, but then they disappear. What is the treatment of gneiss and what are the possible complications of the process?
The main clinical signs of gneiss on the skin
Initially, unaltered skin develops severe itching. The skin becomes more reactive to the actions of external stimuli. Itching of the skin gradually increases and becomes more intense in the evening. After that, rashes on the skin and traces of scratching appear, and then spots and rashes become covered with dense yellowish crusts. Gneiss can affect the scalp and is common in children under 2 years of age. There is the appearance of spots on the skin, which are mainly localized on the cheeks and forehead. Foci of inflammation can be localized on the buttocks, shins and scalp. The affected areas are constantly wet, forming crusts.
What processes accompany the appearance of gneiss?
Exacerbation of the disease that caused the appearance of gneiss is manifested by the presence of elements of a rash on the skin. Skin rashes are represented by papules that appear on reddened skin. Most often, gneiss appears in the folds of the skin – bend your knees and elbows, behind your ears. This is accompanied by severe dryness and flaking of the skin. The face with strong manifestations of gneiss takes on the appearance of "atopic" when the color becomes duller, pigmentation around the eyes increases, and an additional skin fold forms on the lower eyelid. When the exacerbation of gneiss passes, only dry skin and the presence of cracks on the back of the hands or between the fingers remain.
Why is the presence of gneiss dangerous during exacerbation of dermatitis?
Like many rashes, gneiss is dangerous not so much by the presence as by the development of complications. Complications with gneiss occur quite often, since the process is localized on the skin, and this is the entrance gate for infections. The intense itching that is present with gneiss causes the person to scratch the body, resulting in more itching. Against this background, the development of an infectious process caused by microbes or fungi is possible. Let us consider in more detail the types of complications in gneiss.
Complications of gneiss:
- skin pyoderma, which is characterized by the presence of pustules on the skin, hiding under the crusts of gneiss, they periodically dry out with the formation of crusts;
- viral skin lesion, when blisters appear with a clear liquid. A common cause of this process is a herpes infection. Rashes with herpetic infection can be not only on the skin, but also on the mucous membranes;
- Fungal infection may complicate the presence of gneiss. So, in children, the oral cavity is often affected, in adults - skin folds, nails and scalp. There are cases of simultaneous appearance of fungal and bacterial lesions of foci.
Is it possible to treat rashes pathogenically? Principles of gneiss therapy
Gneiss should only be treated by a physician. Self-medication with advertised drugs is dangerous, especially when it comes to children. Therapy consists in prescribing antiallergic drugs, antibiotic therapy when an infection is attached, taking sedatives if necessary. It is important to follow a diet that eliminates allergens, as well as to carry out therapy aimed at removing toxins from the body.
Treatment of gneiss as manifested crusts is symptomatic. It is important to prevent exacerbations of the process by strictly observing the rules of proper allergy-free nutrition.
