Botox is a word that is now familiar to almost every woman on the planet. There has been a lot of talk about the dangers and benefits of using Botox preparations in modern medicine for many years. Nevertheless, there is only one conclusion: with the competent and reasonable use of Botox, its positive effect is undeniable. Thousands of women around the world receive daily Botox injections to correct cosmetic defects. The first association that arises with the word Botox is the elimination of wrinkles. But scientists are working every day to research more and more new possibilities for the use of botulinum toxin preparations. As the results of the study show, there really is something to study.
Mechanism of action of botulinum toxin: poison or medicine?
Botulinum toxin is a toxic substance produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. One of the most dangerous infectious diseases - botulism, is caused by this particular bacterium, and leads to paralysis of the muscles of the body, including the respiratory ones, resulting in death. The mechanism of action of botulinum toxin is as follows: it blocks the transmission of impulses from nerve endings to muscle tissues, thus stopping the contractile action of muscle fibers in the blocked area. Botox preparations consist of neurotoxin A and several proteins, are injected directly into muscle tissues in small doses, and do not produce a generalized toxic effect.
Botox can be used for breast reconstruction
American scientists have published data on a recent study, which opens up new possibilities for the use of Botox in modern aesthetic medicine. It turns out that botulinum toxin can be used in reconstructive breast surgery after its radical removal. Due to the fact that the incidence of breast cancer is increasing every year, plastic surgery for breast reconstruction is becoming more relevant, and scientists are trying to find new methods to improve the process of breast reconstruction.
Botulinum toxin can improve the extensibility of transplanted tissues
In case of a major surgical intervention - radical mastectomy, the best effect can be achieved by applying breast reconstruction surgery with separate flaps. A woman is transplanted with a skin flap from her own body, often from the latissimus dorsi or rectus abdominis, under which the implant is placed. However, the skin from these areas is not as soft and stretchy as the breast skin. Therefore, in order to stretch the transplanted area, a special expander is used, which is placed under the transplanted skin and later replaced with an implant. A study by scientists has shown that the use of botulinum toxin can significantly speed up the process of stretching the transplanted flap, as well as reduce the pain associated with it.
Botox may become an indispensable drug for breast reconstruction
The essence of the study was that fifteen of the thirty studied patients who underwent radical mastectomy and skin flap transplantation were prescribed injections of botulinum toxin. The rest were injected with saline to create a placebo effect. Botulinum toxin was injected directly into the pectoral muscle in the amount of 40 units in the form of four injections. According to the results of the study, women who received Botox injections into the pectoral muscle experienced significantly less pain in the postoperative period, in addition, the extensibility of the transplanted tissues increased much faster than in women who received saline. Thus, the researchers proved that Botox preparations can be used not only for the correction of wrinkles,
