Brachioplasty or arm lift – is an operation that is performed to change the shape of the upper arms (from the shoulder joint to the elbow).

With age, and also as a result of significant changes in weight, the skin on the hands sags. During brachioplasty, excess skin and fat is removed to give a more balanced and aesthetic appearance.

Before opting for brachioplasty, consider the following:

  • The inside of the upper arm will be scarred from the shoulder joint to the elbow. Although the scar will become less noticeable over time, it may not completely disappear.
  • Smokers are at greater risk of complications after ANY surgery, so you should consider quitting.

Brachioplasty process

As a rule, brachioplasty is performed under general anesthesia, the duration of the operation is up to three hours. In general terms, the operation includes the following:

  • The surgeon makes an incision on the inside of the upper arm (shoulder to elbow). Sometimes the incision is made on the back of the arm.
  • Excess fat is removed by liposuction (a thin tube (cannula) is inserted into the fat deposits, the fat is sucked out using a pump or a large syringe).
  • The muscles below are reinforced with sutures to align and define the upper arm.
  • The excess skin is cut off.
  • The incisions are sutured.

Immediately after surgery:

  • Drainage tube is inserted into the wound to prevent fluid from accumulating;
  • Bruising and swelling;
  • Possible numbness;
  • Pain and discomfort;
  • Bandages are applied to the upper arms.

Complications of brachioplasty

  • Risks associated with anesthesia, including allergic reactions;
  • Bleeding or infection;
  • Thrombi;
  • Lung collapse;
  • Accumulation of fluid under the wound;
  • Death of tissues along the wound or loss of skin;
  • Nerve damage, which can lead to long-term or permanent numbness in the upper arm or even shoulder;
  • Asymmetry (roughness) of the skin;
  • Ugly or inflamed scar;
  • The need for further surgery to treat complications.
