How to adjust your child to school after summer break

Any child needs to get used to the learning rhythm. How and how long the adaptation period will last depends on children's temperament, age, relationships with the team and from their parents themselves. Moms and dads of first-graders will especially have to be patient. In first grade, children can undergo adaptation from 3 to 6 months. In high school, the adaptation period lasts about a month, and high school students enter the school routine in 2-3 weeks.

Therefore, it is not worth hoping that the child will immediately enter into rhythm, will happily run to school, be the first answer in the lessons, or become attentive and responsible from the first days. He rested for three whole months, and his day and regime were completely different. Now he needs help to rebuild.

10 tips on how to mentally prepare your child for school

1. Set the mode of the day

Already from mid-August, you can gradually switch to school mode. Go to bed no later than 9-10 pm, and get up at 7-8 am. This will help your child get through the beginning of the school year less painfully, when again it will be necessary to get up early, follow a schedule and go to bed on time.

2. Review what you have learned

Summer holidays — this is a time of relaxation and entertainment, but closer to school it will not be superfluous to refresh school knowledge. The younger the child, the more classes should take place in a playful way. And you can also look at new textbooks, get acquainted with new subjects, buy interesting books on the school curriculum, and complete creative tasks. It is not worth forcing a child to read from and to, learn a verse or tell the multiplication table. Unfortunately, adults often forget that children remember better if they play or learn something interesting. The main task of home repetition — it's not  to memorize everything perfectly, but to get your child interested in learning.

3. Buy school supplies together

Stationery, uniform, books — Purchasing all these trappings of school life will help your child realize that school is about to start. It is important to give children the opportunity to choose in this matter. Make the process of shopping interesting and fun, let you show independence, and you will see how the child enthusiastically collects the portfolio.

4. Quietly say goodbye to summer

Children find it hard to get used to the thought that a light, fun, mischievous summer without school desks and homework has already ended. For some, this becomes a real tragedy, which parents warm up with the words “school is coming soon,” “it’s time to get ready,” “what did you learn over the summer,” “you need to pull up your grades.” Instead, help your child "let go" summer: collect all the good summer memories, make a photo album or wall newspaper, mount a video. Tell him that he had a wonderful vacation, but then there is no less interesting events ahead of him.

5. Make a plan

Tell your child about what severy things await him. At the same time, you can plan a family weekend, entertainment, trips to a museum, think about organizing a school trip. Take into account all events: from new subjects, teachers to family celebrations. It is important to make it clear to the child that study — this is not  punishment, but a fascinating process.

6. Organize a party

Sure, September 1st — holiday in all schools. And in your family? Usually even parents sigh in sorrow: “School has started again.” But after all, this day can become a great family tradition: inflate balloons and decorate a child's room with them, go to a cafe or bake a cake at home, give your child a small gift. So you help your child understand that the school year — this is not a reason to be sad, but to rejoice at new meetings, successes, knowledge and events.

7. Watch nutrition

Pay special attention to your child's nutrition. At school, children experience a lot of workload and stress, so in their diet should be:

  • fish, meat, liver;

  • eggs, milk, nuts;

  • greens, potatoes, buckwheat, oatmeal, wheat;

  • bananas, cocoa, pumpkin seeds.

8. Help with homework

At the first stages, it will be difficult for the child to do homework on his own. In the early autumn, the still street is still warm and you want to walk, and not sit to sit textbooks. It’s not worth forcing a child to complete tasks by force, help him distribute his time, where there will be a place for both games and classes. Help if he doesn understand something by explaining a topic or an example, but don do do everything for him.

9. Make time for walks and healthy sleep

Despite the fact that the school has started, we mustn't deprive children of fresh air and active games. It is the foundation of physical health and good mental performance. You need to walk in any weather for at least 1.5 hours (for younger students, 3 hours is considered the norm) per day. The same goes for daytime sleep. For example, children in  first grade still need a  lunchtime nap. In middle and high school — sleep can replace an hour of rest after school.

Help your child learn to learn, take into account his talents and abilities, do not ignore desires. Then the school, with all its organizational and methodological shortcomings, will not become a real punishment for the child. A will be an opportunity to overcome yourself and find your interests.

School — it's not only lessons, homework, and grades. Within its walls, children learn to communicate, interact, take part in various activities.
