Sweating during sleep: possible health problems

It is normal to sweat even at night in extreme heat. However, what if sweating during sleep occurs at any time of the year - and even in the cold? Very often, both men and women complain about this problem equally. Sweating is unpleasant in itself - sometimes it causes a person to wake up due to discomfort: wet night clothes or bed linen. At the same time, such a symptom may indicate health problems that need your attention.

Of course, a person can sweat heavily during sleep not only because of the heat in the room. The reason for this may be synthetic clothing or the same bedding. Even at normal air temperatures, synthetics will block air access to the skin, which will lead to sweating. However, if you sleep in clothes made of natural fabric and on the same bedding, the reason may be hidden in your health.

Sweating during sleep can be a symptom of the following conditions:

  1. Menopause – in this case, excessive sweating is associated with hormonal changes in the body. The problem appears shortly before the onset of menopause - this is one of its first signs. Seeing a doctor in a timely manner will help correct hormonal levels and restore good health.

  2. Heartburn - with a horizontal body position, this problem is aggravated, which leads to excessive sweating. To avoid the problem, take medications at night that reduce the flow of gastric juice.

  3. Snoring – this process itself causes heavy sweating.

  4. Hyperthyroidism is an increased production of thyroid hormones. The disease provokes an increase in body temperature and increased sweating.

  5. Hypoglycemia - if blood sugar levels drop sharply during sleep, this leads to restless sleep, increased sweating, and nightmares. This may be one of the symptoms of diabetes.

Unobvious causes of excessive sweating during sleep

In addition to the diseases described above, there are a number of unobvious reasons that also lead to increased sweating at night:  

  • bacterial diseases - tuberculosis, pneumonia, lung abscess;

  • viral infections - ARVI, mononucleosis, influenza;

  • tumor of the adrenal glands and associated excessive production of hormones;

  • lymphoma - night sweats is one of the symptoms of the disease;

  • acromegaly - increased production of growth hormone also leads to excessive sweating;

  • obesity - increased sweating is associated with hormonal problems in the body, as well as the consumption of foods that stimulate the sebaceous glands.

Additionally, facial sweating may be associated with Parkinson's disease. During panic attacks, excessive work of the sebaceous glands is also observed. Some medications also cause this same problems.

How to get rid of sweating during sleep

If the problem is related to a disease, then it is necessary to deal with the root cause. Cure a disease and its symptoms will disappear. If the cause of sweating is not due to illness, the following tips will help you:

  • cool air in the room - ventilate the room before going to bed or turn on the air conditioner at night;

  • give up caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol;

  • the last meal should be three hours before bedtime;

  • limit your intake of salt and saturated fats, do not overuse sweets and spices;

  • take a shower at night;

  • sleep in clothes made from natural materials, the same rule applies to bed linen.
