Do you find it strange that strangers always greet you? Do you always confuse exits from the subway and waste time trying to find your way to where you have been more than once? In fact, there is a simple explanation for all this – your visual memory is poorly developed, and so that such strange, or rather, ridiculous situations do not repeat with you anymore, you should develop visual memory. There are special exercises aimed at developing visual memory, which you can learn about in the article.

What is visual memory?

Visual Memory – this is a special type of memory, the functioning of which is ensured by the visual analyzer. So, it is the visual memory that is responsible for the long-term storage of visual images in the mind of a person, and he can turn to them at any moment. However, again, the weight depends on how well your visual memory is developed.

Types of visual memory:

Short term. This memory is capable of storing images for a maximum of 30 seconds.

Long-term. Thanks to this memory, we can remember the events that took place in the past.

Iconic. Such a memory stores information for no longer than a second, so if something seemed unnecessary to us, we immediately forget about it.

Despite the fact that visual memory is very important for a person, many neglect the work on its development. Some people by nature remember all events well, as if "photographing" images, and those who are less fortunate forget what they saw in a couple of seconds. But such a shortcoming is not at all a reason to think that nothing can be changed, because it is quite possible to develop visual memory using certain exercises.

Exercises to help develop visual memory

So, in order to develop visual memory you should:

Turn images into words. Many people who are not endowed with a good visual memory can compensate for this lack by the ability to memorize words in a certain order. Break the image into parts and give them a verbal description, taking into account as many details as possible.

Example: You met a person once in your life, and soon you will again have the opportunity to meet him among a large crowd of people. Imagine that you are describing an unfamiliar person for the purpose of compiling an identikit: “Short stature, thin build, blond hair, medium length, light eyes, thin eyebrows. The nose is small, neat”.

Due to the fact that the visual image is transformed into verbal symbols, it will be possible to highlight the details that were missed during a fleeting acquaintance.  Thus, going to a meeting, you will pronounce a verbal portrait of a person to yourself, providing the brain with material for reproducing a visual picture.

Break the whole into details. It is much easier for the brain to remember not a complete image, but its fragments, and then put them together to form a complete picture.

Example: in the early stages of learning, future Chinese translators often encounter difficulties in memorizing characters. In order to make life easier for their students, teachers all hieroglyphs consist of the same characters, which are combined in different ways. Therefore, by studying every detail, the process of memorizing hieroglyphs is greatly simplified.

In the same way, you can set yourself the task of remembering how a person is dressed. To do this, divide the image into three zones – legs, torso and head. Now it remains to remember the information for each of the – for head – hairstyle or headdress, for the torso, the number of items of clothing (dress or T-shirt + jeans), for the legs – shoes (boots, shoes or sneakers). After that, it remains only to remember the color scheme of each detail.

Copy asymmetrical patterns. This is a very effective exercise that provides & nbsp; strong influence on the development of visual memory. Since it can be difficult to perform it, it is best to start mastering this technique as a child. You will need a stone with a network of veins like malachite or marble, if these are not available, photographs will do.

Example: drawing on paper an image of a stone with pencils, taking into account all the details and features of the color and structure of the object. After that, the drawing is put aside, the same is reproduced on a blank sheet, but already from memory. It is quite difficult to complete such a task, so you need to be patient and not give up trying to make an exact copy.

Use puzzles and puzzles. At first glance, it may seem that these are all children's entertainments, but it is thanks to them that it is possible to develop visual memory for adults as well.

Example: games where you need to remember what order the objects were in, pictures where you need to find differences.

Develop synesthetic perception. What does a rainy day smell like? What does green taste like? Thanks to just such associations, it is possible to develop a connection between visual images and sensations of other senses. It is synesthesia that contributes to the strong fixation of images in the mind.

Example: each metro line is marked with a certain color, because many people will remember the color more easily than the name of each station. That is why all brands have their own memorable colors.

Pay attention to details. If the brain does not need instructions to remember the elements of the seen picture, it does not really strain. Exercises will help you learn to automatically memorize details and thereby develop your visual memory.

Example: how was the acquaintance you met on your way to work dressed? How did he gesture? What was he wearing? What was the background behind him?

These effective exercises will help develop visual memory. You will be able to remember every detail and use this knowledge to your advantage.
