Scientists have collected data that allow us to trace clear patterns of the aging process, which differs at the molecular level in different people. 

The researchers analyzed a number of biological samples, including blood and stool samples, which they periodically collected from the participants.

In these, they looked for changes in the presence and activity of various microbes and signaling molecules, including proteins, metabolites, and lipids.

Through their analysis, the researchers identified four different "age types":

  • metabolic (associated with the accumulation and breakdown of substances in the body);
  • immune (associated with immune reactions);
  • hepatic (associated with liver function);
  • nephrotic (associated with kidney function).

Professor Snyder and colleagues explain that people with a predisposition to metabolic aging may be at higher risk of developing conditions such as diabetes.

The team of scientists also notes that people may be predisposed to not only one, but two or more types of aging, thus facing a cumulative risk of various health problems.

Possibilities for slowing down aging

The researchers also made another remarkable finding: in the 2 years they collected data on participants, not everyone showed a change in age markers.

More remarkably, some people who have changed their lifestyle – especially in terms of diet, markers of aging were reduced. However, for some people who made lifestyle changes, improvements were not apparent at the time of the study.

Some participants age-related changes in the levels of key molecules occurred at a slower rate.

Professor Snyder, who has also analyzed his biological samples over time, is hopeful that his lifestyle changes will prove more effective.

The team also notes that their current – this is just the beginning of a long and difficult journey to understanding how aging works.

Many mysteries remain, and researchers hope to find more answers over time.
