Treatment of thrush in children: what parents need to know

Fungi of the genus Candida live everywhere: on the human body, things, in the air, surfaces. They are relatively harmless, but in favorable conditions they quickly begin to multiply. Then we face thrush, or candidiasis. The most common symptom in children — white, similar to curd, plaque in the mouth. But this is not the only manifestation of thrush.

Where can thrush occur in children

  • In mouth. The mucous membrane of the mouth is covered with a white coating, under which inflammation is hidden.

  • On the genitals of boys and girls. The genitals become inflamed and swollen.     girls develop a cheesy discharge, and   boys may experience difficulty urinating.

  • On skin. The skin becomes inflamed, flaky and itchy. Diaper rash and red spots appear on skin folds.

Treatment of thrush in children should be timely, as it signals problems with immunity. The disease should not be allowed to take its course or be treated only by folk methods.

In addition to external manifestations, thrush gives babies anxiety. They become moody, often cry, sleep poorly, refuse to breastfeed.

What danger does thrush pose to a child

  1. This is a contagious disease, so it can spread throughout the body. Most often it is the skin and  mucous membranes, less often — internal organs.

  2. Untreated thrush causes inflammation and allergic reactions.

  3. In rare cases, thrush leads to blood poisoning.

  4. In girls, vaginal thrush can cause fusion of the labia.

Rules for the treatment of thrush in children

The treatment of thrush has its own characteristics, so parents should definitely show the child to the doctor. He prescribes treatment taking into account the history of birth and previous illnesses of the baby. For example, preterm birth, pregnancy complications, antibiotic treatment are considered complicating factors. Perhaps only local therapy will not be enough.

If the baby has a mild form of thrush, then it can be treated with soda solution. To do this, dissolve 1.5 teaspoons of soda in a glass of warm water. Mix the solution well and treat the baby's mouth with it. This can be done with a cotton swab or a bandage wound around the finger.

Your pediatrician may also prescribe special solutions to treat plaque or ointments for the skin. For moderate to severe symptoms, antifungal drugs are prescribed both externally and internally.

If treatment of thrush is treated comprehensively, then it will pass in 5-10 days. Breastfeeding helps speed up this process.

The second danger to the child — violation of hygiene rules and living conditions. It is on them that the prevention of thrush is aimed.

How to prevent infecting a child with thrush:

  1. Never put your baby's nipples in your mouth. Your saliva can also harbor fungi. Wash your and hands before eating and after going outside.

  2. Whatever the child puts in mouth, sterilize and rinse with hot water.

  3. Fungi love sweets, so after eating or spitting up, give your baby some water so that the mouth does not form an acidic environment. When the first tooth appears, start brushing it with a special children's brush.

  4. Do not spend a long time in a diaper or a wet diaper. Change diapers more often and give baby air baths.

  5. It is important that the baby does not overheat. The air in the room must be sufficiently humid (50-60%) and cool (maximum 21°C). These parameters should be especially monitored when the child has a runny nose. If he breathes through his mouth, then this causes dryness and reduces the protective properties of saliva.
