Hygge  is a phenomenon that is most often associated with comfort, wealth and well-being. It is these words that have taken root in the Scandinavian countries. They also denote the way of life followed by the Danes. Scandinavians are alien to haste and fuss, which is typical for Europeans. They live slowly, enjoying every moment of life. The Danes value atmosphere and sensations more than material values. So, they find happiness in the little things: fragrant cocoa, delicious chocolate, pleasant pastime, reading books. Hygge has become so popular that entire books are dedicated to it. One of them is the world bestseller "Hygge. The Secret of Danish Happiness" written by Mike Wiking, founder of the Happiness Research Institute based in Copenhagen. In his book, the author describes the key principles of hygge followed by the Danes. we will talk about them below.

The main principles of hygge, which are actively used in Denmark

Recognizing hygge is very easy. This phenomenon is expressed, first of all, by in the following principles:

  • Cosy environment. Since Denmark has very short daylight hours and almost always unfavorable weather, most people spend their leisure time at home. And in order to be comfortable here, and not be gloomy at heart, they equip their nests in the best possible way, and without any special financial costs. Even small things like a fire in the fireplace, hand-woven carpets and candles placed throughout the house help to relax and enjoy life. The Danes are the world leaders in the number of candles used. And this is no coincidence. After all, these products serve as an excellent source of light that sets you up for comfort.

  • Benevolent attitude. In Denmark, there are no such concepts as "envy", "hypocrisy" and "aggressiveness". The inhabitants of this country are very friendly towards other people. They always thank, apologize, show concern and wish you a good day. However, gaining their trust is not easy.

  • Spending time together. A picnic with relatives or friends, a walk in the picturesque surroundings, a joint game - all this can be said about hygge. The Danes love to spend time with their family and friends. They get together at least once a week. Moreover, companies usually have no more than 4 people in order to fully communicate with everyone without depleting their energy.

  • Delicious food. Scandinavians really appreciate everything tasty, whether it's a cinnamon roll, glazed cookies, hot chocolate or aromatic tea. Handmade dishes are especially appreciated. The aroma of homemade food is incomparable. It is the attribute of hygge.

Uncovering the secrets of a happy life in Danish

In order to fully understand this philosophy of life, knowledge and reading the book alone is not enough. You have to experience everything for yourself. But how to do that? It's very simple: use the secrets of a happy life that the Danes are willing to share.

Comfort at home and office: create a special atmosphere

If it's raining hard outside, don't be sad. You can bring joy to your workplace with a beautiful flowerpot, photos from an interesting trip, or some funny figurine. And home comfort is created by fragrant candles, pillows of delicate natural colors, a fireplace, as well as a warm blanket in which you can wrap yourself up and read your favorite book somewhere in a secluded corner, for example, on a wide windowsill surrounded by the same pillows.

Spend time with friends and family

You can't work all the time. In addition to official duties, there should also be pleasant moments spent with family or friends. And for this it is not necessary to go to a restaurant. Spontaneous dinner at home is the best solution. It's also a good idea to get together at home to watch a movie together or to play an interesting board game. And if the weather is wonderful outside, gather in the forest or park for a picnic. And do not forget to turn off all gadgets so that communication will bring real pleasure.

Delicious food: learn how to cook something with your own hands

What could be tastier than a fragrant freshly baked bun or stewed stew seasoned with various oriental spices? Homemade food is much tastier than store-bought convenience foods.

It's made with love. Therefore, arm yourself with interesting recipes and cook something unusual, something that guests will be completely delighted with. By the way, in Denmark there is one interesting custom: friends gather at someone's house and together prepare supplies for the winter from the ingredients that they bring. And when the time comes, they all try it at one friendly table. You can also get together with loved ones and figure something out.

Bring more comfortable items to your wardrobe

If you're tired of tight pants, tight synthetic blouses, high-heeled shoes and short jackets, replace them with more comfortable clothes. Soft sweaters made of natural wool, knitted scarves and socks, oversized coats, comfortable sneakers – Danish fashion is quite hygge.

Scandinavian style products are very concise, comfortable and stylish.

Enjoy the sweet moments and little pleasures

The best things in the world are not expensive watches or luxurious dresses. The most valuable things cannot be bought with money. This is the laughter of a child, the sparkle in the eyes of a loved one, the crackling noise of a fire, the scent of flowers, the smell of grandmother's baking and much more.

Being happy is very easy. The main thing is to find joy in small things, give good to others and enjoy the wonderful moments spent with loved ones.
